Anyone else hear this noise when refueling? I get the strangest looks from other people. BTW I use Sunoco and have no issues with the gas nozzles.

Wow, that's strange. I definitely have never heard that, or any other noise, when removing the fuel cap, and I've never had any trouble with fueling either.

We are fortunate not to have those fueling issues in MD. I'm in CA this past week and having the fueling issue at half the stations with the rental car. Have to hold the nozzle at a certain angle and partial flow to avoid premature cutoff.

Sounds like air escaping causing the little anti theft cover to vibrate. If that is what is Happening, you have more pressure in your tank than anything I've experienced. Seems like it should be venting better than that. Are you using ethanol blend? Is it warm where you are? Is the car hard to fuel?

On several occasions last summer, I heard the same sound. Lasted 5-10 seconds. Both times it happened, the weather was warm (which around here, doesn't happen that often). Figured it was the equalization of my fuel tank pressure (which built up due to the warmer weather) with the ambient outside air pressure. (In FL, I would expect you'd hear that sound often.)

Don't think anything is wrong. Due to emission and evaporative controls, fuel tanks are sealed pretty good these days. I've heard "whooshing" sounds before, when I opened the fuel caps on other vehicles. But, I gotta admit. When I heard the sound for the first time, I did look around to see if anyone else was checking out my "tuned" gas tank.

I fueled on a number of 90-100ºF days last summer, and I've never heard any pressure escaping-type noises upon removing the fuel cap.

Haven't had any extreme hit weather here since I got mine, but haven't heard anything like that either. most cars I have ever had the pressure is released with a whoosh as soon as you open the cap on really hot days.

I am also in Florida and it was in the 90s last week and did not hear that noise when I purchased gas.

I lived in Florida for 15 years and never heard that sound.

I'm in Miami and never heard that before. I usually refill my vert at night though.

Just to test a theory- has the car been out for a long run when this happens, or is it still cold?

Come to Cali if you want to spend 10-15 minutes refueling...

Truth.

Last time I filled up, the attendant came out to tell me not to "top-off" the car. Ugh.

This was an hour commute to work and I stopped 3/4 of the way at my favorite Sunoco station. Highway speeds up to 85 mph and some stop and go town driving at 5:00 am.

My guess is that pressure has built up in the gas tank due to the heated fuel and is now leaking out. Normally there should be a slight 'woosh'.

Try opening the cap after the car has sat untouched overnight to see what happens.

I'd like to say therein lies your problem; your Jag is crying for triple-digit speeds! Of course that's just nonsense but I will say that that's some strange sounds like I've never heard. It's one thing for air escaping and making a brief sound upon opening the gas cap - we've probably all heard that at one time of another (and I'm not saying with our F-Types) - but certainly not for such an extended period of time (or on our F-Types?).

Try my idea of 100+ and call me in the morning.

Best regards,
RJ52

I'd guess it's some part of the vapor recovery system not working correctly? I got a new purge control valve when mine threw a code, although I didn't notice any symptoms.

Here's a discussion of a Boxster which sounds like it has the same issue.

Just figured it out.

Seems my Jag was built with the "AB" option. Rarely seen, the option is more commonly referred to as the "Afterburner" option and is offered on supercharged versions only. Apparently, under certain refueling conditions, the AB's plenum chamber goes through some sort of cool-down process. Odd, though, that my optional equipment list doesn't list the "AB" option.

What are you talking about? Tailpipe flames? Marshmallow roaster? Hamburger grill?

Heh, just playing around a little, that's all.

I figure this issue may well be traced to something amiss in the EVAP system. DJS's response on the purge valve is certainly a possibility, although there have been no temporary/existing codes thrown of which I'm aware. I'll see what's up when I come in for servicing next month.
