Default Newbie with a service at dealership question

Hello everyone!

Newbie here, joined this forum about 2 years ago. Great F-type community!!! I want to apologize for not making any contributions to the forum yet but I promise to do so in the future. Thanks to everyone here, I've leaned so much and am still learning about this beautiful car.

I bought a nice high mileage CPO 2015 S coupe a few years ago. The car is amazing...had only a few minor issues that were taken care under the warranty.

A couple weeks ago, I took the car in for the 50K service at my local dealership. I mentioned about an issue with the "Dynamic mode not available" and was told the technician would road test it and report back to me. To make a long story shorted, I found out a few days ago, the technician took the car home overnight for the road test. I called the dealer and the assistant manager told me it's not uncommon for the overnight road test

My question is...Is taking a customer car home overnight for a road test a common practice? It doesn't sound professional to me.

Best,

I would be very upset if my dealer did that.

Years ago I had that happen with a BMW motorcycle that I brought to the dealer for warranty repair. The technician took the bike out for an ON joy ride and crashed it and did about $6000 in damage to the bike. The dealer fought me every step of the way to make things right and only did when I got a lawyer involved.

Total BS. Unless they ask for your permission.

it is normal for a dealer to do that as long as you consented. some issues require an extended test drive on various types of road conditions to duplicate an issue. doing a block around the dealer sometimes isnt enough to duplicate an issue.

Thank you all for the reply.

I'm aware of and understand the extended road test to duplicate the issue. That's why I didn't mention here about the mileage that were put on the car. It's just that I was never explained clearly, as a matter of fact, the technician never mentioned to me nor asked for a permission for an overnight road test.

I guess we should do a poll on...Would you consent to "I'll take your car for a test drive to my house tonight and bring it back tomorrow morning"?

I still say that is absolute BS. In legal terms it represents "Conversion" in my opinion. While they may need to take it for a longer drive to replicate conditions. And may need to drive it/or start it on multiple days, there is ABSOLUTELY no reason, or right to take the car to their home. PERIOD. I would have my foot in there @ss over that one. I have seen similar deals on the Porsche forums where they took it home and caused damage to the cars. Kids playing ball, bikes scratching it....seriously BS.

Agreed with everyone. Unacceptable. Never heard of an “overnight” road test. I’d mention the word lawyer here.

I was a Jaguar service manager for over 30 years @ a metro Boston dealer. It was common practice for myself or one of the techs to road test a car overnight. We had one tech who lived 50 miles away, he was the one who would drive a car to reset all the OBD monitors so we could perform a state inspection after repairs. It was always done with the customers permission & the work order in the car. I had customers that requested I drive their car for a couple of nights to make sure it was ok.

My issue with an overnight test drive would be if I wasn't asked for consent. If you told me about it, I would have the opportunity to ask questions, like "How many miles each way", or "Is it being parked outside or in a garage". Just things like that before I gave permission.

When I drop my car off at the dealership, I expect it's going to stay overnight at the dealership. Well lit parking lot or in the garage most likely under surveillance. Not at some random person's house parked on the street.

I completely agree. When I had an independent shop I would do this rarely, but only when specifically called for by the complaint and with explicit permission.
