My 2017 R went off warranty. With previous cars I would switch from the dealer a a solid mechanic shop specializing with that car. Does anyone know a good shop in the NJ Essex, Union or Morris County area or am I stuck with the dealership.

Like many indie shops, though, he doesn't have the equipment to do involved troubleshooting. (As long as you keep a fresh battery in the car, though, you should be OK!)

There are others in Morris County that I know of. Since I do my own routine maintenance, I've no personal experience with any of them.
If anyone else has input, I'm all ears...

 

Here's another possibility for you. I visited this business last year. I don't know how he is other than having a conversation with him and I understand he is a super neat freak and very particular with what he does, regarding customers vehicles. You can contact him or visit the place and do your research to determine if he's right for you.

PS he is the "old school" Italian man.
