Default Oil Change How Much

just curious how much your jag dealer charges for oil change. I'm getting one this week and they quoted me $190. I was actually pleasantly surprised because the local oorsche dealer charges $400.

Geesh that's actually pretty darned good (relatively). My Range Rover is $400. I too would be very interested to hear the quotes folks are getting.

The Porsche dealers rip people off on these things. What I tend to do is take my own supplies (i.e. take the filter and the oil) so they are forced to charge you for hourly labor. Very hard for them to argue they took more than an hour for labor.

My BMW dealer quoted me $400 for an off-maintenance-cycle oil change on M5, but only $35 for labor. So I took my own oil ($90 from Amazon) and my own filter ($35 from an online BMW parts vendor), and got the job done for $160.

How often do you guys do your oil? the manual says like 15,000 miles or something like that, I think.

Why do people take their cars to a dealer for an oil change?

I generally just follow factory recommendation but getting one early because I've done a few track days w/ the car so figured no harm in getting one a little early since the cost isn't ridiculous.

Convenience for me. Very close to my work (walking distance). Obviously if you want to save a few bucks then you can always find an independent guy to do the work.

I seem to remember that some oil-cooled 911 engines needed the best part of three gallons of fully synthetic oil, so that price is pretty keen if the oil is included.

I've found that the dealers of most U.S. manufacturers don't seem to feel the need to price gouge on oil changes. My Jeep dealer charges $25 for an oil change. I used to do it myself on all my cars, but at that price, it's not worth the trouble.

I would do one oil change after break-in at 1200 miles, and then one every 6 months. It would take me 2 years to get to 15k.

Shift, British Motors in SF had a special for about $79 during the summer. I keep waiting for them to update their service specials page since I'm not in a hurry....

Unless it's changed, the only place you can buy the oil they spec for the F-type is from Jaguar.

They have their own label for it, but the specification and certification matches Castrol Edge 5W-20 as per this document.

The thing I wonder is if I can use 0W-20 instead of 5W-20. The cap says 5W-20, the manual says 0W-20. In most cases you can use a 0W oil instead of 5W, and I have had great results switching my BMW from 5W-30 to 0W-30 - faster warm up to engine operating temperature, smoother running when cold, works great at high heats too.

Like you, I wouldn't think twice at $25.

At $190, ummmmmmmmmmm.

I got no idea how they can make money on a $25 oil change if they are using synthetic and servicing a V8. 8 quarts of synthetic cost $75 at least.

Did they charge for the disposal of the old oil?

That was my post quoting $25 at a Jeep dealer for a Jeep. That's for conventional oil, which I have changed every 3K miles or so at that price. If I wanted to go full synthetic, I think it's $50, but hey, it's just a Jeep Wrangler, which I like to off-road and serves as an excellent snow vehicle. There's no need to use full synthetic if you change the oil every 3K miles on a normally aspirated vehicle that doesn't see 7K redlines.

My post was meant to illustrate that it is ridiculous price gouging to charge $190 for an oil change for either the V6 or V8 F-Type engines, and that most dealers of U.S. vehicles don't charge the rates that the exotic or wannabe exotic dealers charge. If I recall correctly, an oil change on my C6 Z06 at the dealer was around $50 for full synthetic since they buy in bulk.

Be happy you don't live in the UK Foosh. $190 is a cheap oil change...
