Default Pedal feature

Could someone tell me what this option in the configurable dynamics system actually does? Was under the assumption that I could adjust the gas pedal sensitivity (and brake) by using this feature but it appears it's basically just a graph for for visual effects. Is there a way to adjust the gas pedal so it is more responsive or quicker to engage when I floor it? Seems like there is a "pedal lag" while operating the vehicle in automatic with the dynamic features on. I did attempt to find information and videos concerning this issue prior to soliciting advice from the experts on here. Thanks.

That adjusts the gas pedal response. It does nothing for the brakes. The dynamic option should make the first part of the travel more sensitive. It don't affect full throttle. One hundred percent is one hundred percent either way.

Your pedal lag may well be due to the ZF box not realising you've woken up. Once it learns that you want to press on it'll become sharper.

Steve, when I look at the graph feature on the screen it shows a line for the gas and brake but it does not allow me to adjust it. If I step on the gas or brake (while parked in the garage) the tick marks will move depending on how hard I push the pedals so it appears it's just for visual effect? What brought me to this question was during some spirited driving yesterday with my friend who has a 911 Turbo S. It seems to have a second or two of lag when I floor it and once it engages it's a rocket ship. I think scm may be onto something with the transmission/computer. This car has lived a charmed life and I have a feeling that the previous owner was very conservative and it needs to learn my more aggressive driving habits. So back to my original question, the feature on the touch screen does not allow me to fiddle with the sensitivity of the pedal manually?

Correct, any throttle mapping is done by selecting dynamic or snow/rain mode. If, when you first get in the car, you drive it like you stole it, the gearbox should get the hint pretty quickly, I know my 2010 XKR was that. If I've been driving my F-Type gently for a long time, it can take about 5 seconds to start shifting when I engage kickdown. Like you say, after that it takes off like a scalded cat (which you'd expect from a jaguar, after all!).

Thanks scm, appreciate the input. If I'm using the paddles the pedal response is instantaneous and I was hoping for a way to get that same reaction while in automatic mode by adjusting the touch screen settings. So what is the purpose of the pedal feature on the dynamic configuration screen, am I missing something?

The "pedal feature" records what you're doing with them. With configurable dynamics, the left side has Setup, a stopwatch, the G-meter, and the pedal. Go to Setup and make look at what "Engine" shows. That's the pedal sensitivity. The default is that when you select Dynamic mode, all three go to Dynamic. You can change what the three settings are in Dynamic mode. For example, I like Dynamic mode to have Dynamic on Steering and Suspension, but I want the gas pedal to always be the same, regardless of mode. Perhaps I'd feel differently if I had the automatic.

If you have Dynamic, but not "Configurable Dynamic" you may not see what I've described.

Kind of got it and thanks. My set up screen is "dynamic " for everything except for steering which I keep in "normal" for consistency. But to my curiosity, there is not a separate setting for the pedal, I see steering, suspension and engine only. When I click the pedal icon it gives me the brake and gas horizontal graphs but does not allow me to adjust them. How are you adjusting your pedal response is my question? So if I understand the process correctly, having the vehicle in dynamic mode (the switch to the left of the shifter) will give me the most sensitivity and the quickest pedal reaction time I can possibly achieve when I stomp on the gas. There is nothing else I can do to improve on the momentary lag other than putting the transmission into sport/manual?

I think lizzardo has already explained but *you* can't adjust the pedal response when in D, well not by using any adjustments on the car.
It's not just engine response it's mainly gearbox response, ie how quickly it downshifts, I would say 10% engine and 90% gearbox.
Put it in S and/or use the paddles and the pedal/gearbox response is quicker/sharper with much less lag.
Drive it like you stole it in D and after a little while the pedal/gearbox response also becomes much quicker.
Go back to pootling and after a while the response goes mushy again.
You can tighten up the response a bit with a VAP tune as they can adjust the pedal response part of the tune but again it's mainly gearbox response as the controllers "talk" to each other, Powertrain Control Module (PCM) for the engine and Transmission Control Module (TCM) for the auto trans.
Some VAP customers have found their tune default throttle response to be too sudden/jerky/on-off for their liking and have asked VAP to send them a modified tune with a more progressive and forgiving throttle response. VAP also sell an auto trans tune for the F-Type but I don't know if or how it sharpens up the initial response and/or the interaction between the PCM and the TCM.
I have the "default" engine tune and I would like an even more responsive throttle, something like what I think you are after where it doesn't matter how long you have been pootling about in D the throttle response is always instantaneous, but that risks making the go pedal too hard to modulate. My first Jag was my first ever auto trans car and on most of my previous manual trans cars I adjusted the throttle cable/linkage such that the merest tickle of the go pedal started to open the throttle butterfly so I had zero lag. But of course I needed to down-change to the optimal gear beforehand to get maximum acceleration!

Thanks guys, and OzXFR's one sentence "you can't adjust the pedal response when in D by using any adjustments on the car" made it perfectly clear to me. I will continue to drive it like I stole it in D for a period to reprogram the computer. And yes, with my former manuals I was able to have the throttle cable adjusted for a quicker real time response. And as lizzardo explained, the pedal feature only "records" what you're doing with them even though I'm not sure what I would actually do with that information. Maybe it's useful if you're tracking the car? Guess I had a little lag time myself this afternoon!

The pedal graph you see is not a sensitivity selector, it is a real time graph of how much throttle/brake you are using.

Try it when driving and you will see what it does.

Hi Portlander - are you really referring to a second or two of lag when you floor it in dynamic before it takes off? In a SVR?

If so, something is wrong. You should have tons of power even without kickdown as these engines have amazing power delivery even at modest revs. And it should kickdown instantly if you floor it

I know the transmission learns and adapts as described above - but flooring it in dynamic is a very clear 'poke'

You may want to have your dealer reflash the transmission control / Engine control to see if that addresses
Do you know if the prior owner added a tune?

Maybe I'm wrong but mine is also a 2017 SVR and I drive normally a lot of time time. But the moment I put my foot down...

Thanks Ray Ray, so it's basically for track use similar to the stopwatch and G force indicator?

The car has not been tuned (only 7K miles) and I will play with it a little more once the rain finally disappears on Tuesday. The power is there and it is violent once it engages but it's not as instantaneous as when I floor it while in manual/ dynamic/sport mode. I did remove the ability to manually shift while in D on one of the settings options, not sure if that would be a factor.

BritCars, I'm heading to Portsmouth, NH next Sunday (weather permitting) for Cars and Coffee at the Fox Run Mall. Will be bringing a couple of friends (Porsche 911 Turbo S and BMW M4) and it would be great to have another F Type in the mix if you're free?

Just went to the car and tested it, it's used in conjunction with the stop watch, once you start the stop watch it starts recording gas/brake along with G force.

Kinda like how corvette performance recorder work, but without the camera footage it is not very useful.

Ima play with it tomorrow and see if there is an option to export the recording and overlay it onto a video.

In mine the pedal display and G-force indicator work all the time - no stopwatch activation necessary. Not sure what you mean by recording?

yep tried again today, they work independent of each other, no obvious way to export the recording, not very useful.

I don't know why you think there's a recording to export, it's just a real time display, like the speedometer - you wouldn't expect to be able to export your speedometer's display after a trip, would you?

I'd rather focus on the road instead of the screen if any meaningful Gs were produced 🤣
