I've never had luck getting those tiny twin suction cup mounts to hold in place, but that would certainly be the only way to get it high enough in the cutout (if it's even possible). few things can startle a person as much as a radar detector falling off the windshield while at highway speed.

 

I'd be super interested if people with a 2017 could get these to fit up near the mirror or not.

 

The older Unidens like the DFR7 came with 3m tape in addition to the suction cups. I wonder if the R1 and R3 will too.

From the review, the R1 and R3 are the same size as the Redline/Magnum so there is hope that it will fit in the cutout. It will be interesting to see the results.

For years America was on a CB & Detector Kick, everyone had one, Even New model vehicles, they were a add on. All trucker's used them and regular driver found how useful they can be. Not only for speeding tickets, but to avoided traffic jams, emergencies, etc..
I am most interested in the R D talking to each other. The R D book states : If you are travelling South, and others travelling North, with the same R D, you will be warned of any Speed Traps they pass & record the location. This, if works, is outstanding.

Escort Live at your service

 

As others have said....with the UV windshield, any windshield mount will be severely limited if not useless. I'd go with a good remote if your serious about protection. RDfourm is your best bet for info.

If you are looking into Escort Live, check out Waze which uses crowd sourcing to report the location of Police. In high density areas it works great, especially against laser.


I have seen mixed reviews on Escort Live so I would be interested in your experience especially how it compares to Waze.

 

Bill was asking about RD to RD communications. That's what Live is doing - no user input required. Wase is great, but relies on user input. Its big benefit is much better user base. If Live was as big as Waze it would be much better. But it isn't, so Waze is for me for now. As a part of layered CM defense.

 

I do agree that the remote mount is the best way to go for protection, however I would not characterize my Magnum as worthless. Mounted in the hole in the windshield I would say I am getting Max360 levels of performance from the few detections I had.

Just today I had a huge save from my radar detector in a rental. I got hit with I/O and was able to hit the brakes and avoid a ticket. The cop pulled out but I don't think he was able to lock my speed because he didn't pull me over. The Magnum in the Jag would have alerted for sure but honestly I probably would have gotten pulled over in the Jag because it's not a family sedan.

 

I just tried to find the afore mentioned Passport 9500 ci. Looks like it has been superseded.
Has anyone found a way to use a detector for a '17 F-type? I do like to keep the constabulatory in sight.

 

CI stands for custom installation. This is a remote install. You can find plenty of companies producing this type of radar detectors. Stinger VIP, Radenso HD+, NetRadar (with shifters), Beltronics StIR+ (also discontinued I believe).

Or you can buy them used.

 

I can kind of get my valentine one on the driver side, I think about half is covered by the film still though.

 

Can anyone tell me where to tap for a radar detector? The only 2 spares I see are on the blue plug to the right.

I read that thread however the plug is different then mine. Even the wires are a different color then mine. Can you piggy back onto one of the other wires?

 

Yes but you can't just pick randomly. Someone will have to produce the wiring diagram for this harness to help you.

 

Invest in a multi meter ($10), start the car, touch metal part of a car with one probe, and start touching the wires with the tip of the other probe. When you see 12V on the display turn the car off and make sure 12 V disappears. That's the wire you want to use.

You will see some always on wires too, which are going to be good if you are attaching a dash cam with the parking mode for example. Not that good for RD though...

 

I followed that thread for mine and it's been working just fine, although I did have to add Valentine's doo-dad (a glorified capacitor) to keep it from resetting when auto start/stop auto started.

Mine's a 2016, so not much help to you.

If you do get a multimeter and poke around you may mistake a switched power lead for an always-on lead. After engine shutoff my detector doesn't shut off immediately. There's a delay.
