Default Rear Differential Fluid Change DIY

Hi Group...

After publishing many DIY articles/documents on the various Porsche forums, I thought I would do the same here on this forum, to the extent they are useful and/or helpful.

Cars are my relaxing hobby, when I have the time. So I enjoy learning about them and modifying or fixing them. For the last number of years, I have been doing that in the Porsche and BMW forums/communities,
so I thought as I tinker with the F-Type, I would document some of those items here with my new Jaguar forum friends as well

So, while cooped up due to this lovely Bat/Pangolin disease I did some work on the F-Type. First up was front and rear Differential fluid change. I took some photos and documented the process, and put them in my
DIY template. I have attached the Rear process, and will likely get the front posted soon...as time permits. The Porsche forums found these useful so I continued to produce them. If not useful, I still photograph and document for my
own records.

These are created in the spirit of helping others. If you have a better way of doing it, knock yourself out...this is simply what worked for me.

how frequently do you recommend doing this? also you got a hell of a car collection going on there!

Yes...That is great. About to upload the Front as well, so feel free to snag that one too. More to come as I have time to document what I have done to date, and will do....

Well done...much appreciated.



I've used the IV type fill procedure on our other cars (one of which has a 2-year or 30K rear diff fluid interval). With this method, you need a plug for the IV tube to prevent messy spills. A proper sized bolt does the trick as long as you have it close-by when its time to withdraw the tube.


Those cheap fluid pumps only seem to work two or three times no matter how well you clean them. I've taken to having new ones on hand to prevent frustration.

Thanks! Note what I am recommending is not per JLR, just my own thoughts. Given the relative ease and low cost, I will likely do this about every 15-20K miles. As you can see, it is pretty black and nasty after only 21K. The front Diff, was not dirty at all...pretty clean, but again, will likely do at the same time while I have it up.

Thanks! And great tip about something to plug it up when done! I use the hose clamps like the one below....works well also.

Agree on those pumps too. I actually have a better electric fluid pump, but it would not pump it. Something screwed up in the pump mechanism. It would run....but nothing moved. Even tried on thin fluid...no go.

@Therock88 Really useful writeup ~ thank you.

One area thst needs changing though to save any confusion....
These diffs require a set quantity of oil and therefore don't fill to the filler mark as you would on a conventional straight diff.

I'll try to get the info, if memory serves me it's 1.2L wet.

The capacities are below. For my application the amount listed did fill it to the fill hole. I added the below info to my document for clarity.

Thanks. I recently sold a shop I owned in a nearby city...and had 6 lifts. Each one was great for one thing, but not for another. So at my home garage I decided on a mid-sized scissor lift. With my original quote of nearly $2K to change the plugs and coils in my 997 Turbo, it made sense to just buy a lift and do it myself.

I like it, and it has been very useful. Only challenge is if you need access to the center of the car, but I have extensions that help with that too. It has worked for most anything I have needed to do.

Dry fill is the amount of differential fluid needed on a new (or totally rebuilt) unit.

But, Wet Fill is the amount you need when draining the differential in the car. There is always an amount that remains, you can't get it all out.

Thanks DC. I did mine today at 36k miles. Brownish/black with a burnt odor. It actually smelled worse than it looked. Replacing the fill screw was a PITA!

My Pleasure! Glad you got it done OK. And yes, they wedged that fil screw up in a bad spot! Gear Oil typically smells horrible too.

Thank you for the great DIY for both the front and rear diff fluid changes.
I have recently purchased my Type F R with 20k miles on her.
So I will be doing these two fluid changes myself very soon.

I have not seen any DIY for the transfer case fluid change.
Would you be able to post this for everyone.
Much appreciated.

Yes. Correct. I wrote two for Diff's. I have not changed other fluids. My assumption is that this transmission is similar to my 997 Turbo, and the Transfer case is part of/integrated into the actual transmission. Have not really looked into it though. Perhaps someone who has can chime in? At any rate, I have only had time to write up the Diff's to date.
