Default Remap and insurance

Just wondering if any UK owners have had the mild remap to 400bhp in a V6S and told their insurance company? If so, what effect did it have on premiums?

Why would anyone tell their insurance company? Unless your changing the vehicles legal “use” they don’t need to know...I would think.

If you don't tell the insurance company, and you're involved in an accident (particularly if someone is hurt) then you can be declared uninsured for not declaring a modification. Hence very bad financial and other consequences. They might not find out about the mod, but if the car is sent for checking by Jaguar they will know. Probably unlikely they would get a car checked, but if someone died........

Most UK insurance companies are rather averse to "modifications", even if it's adding something cosmetic. And as Malcolm points out it could invalidate your insurance, and I think (though am welcome to be corrected) the police can order your car to be crushed for such infractions, though that may only be for persistent offenders.

Don't think they can crush the car for an undeclared mod, but it can be towed to their compound as an uninsured car. Then, you have to show them you are insured (having declared the mod). If you don't within a period of time (10 days I think) they can crush it. You also have to pay for it being towed and stored. Don't think I'd mod it without talking to my insurance company first. Interested in what others have done though, and what it may have done to their premium.

Other replies will already have illustrated that vehicle insurance operates very differently in the US to the way it does in the UK.

All UK motor vehicle insurance policies (with the exception of Motor Trader policies which cover named employees for any vehicle) require declaration of any changes to the original build. This includes accessories and performance upgrades. Declaration is not optional and it is unequivocal regardless of anyone's personal opinion or misgivings.

Thanks Graham, makes sense that UK policies are different. I’ve never heard of that being an issue in a US policy but perhaps it is in their somewhere.
