Default Resale Values

Since this forum has members from several geographically seperate markets, I'm curious to hear what the resale values of the f-type are in markets other than the UK.

Here in the UK, the JLR website provides a trade-in price tool, but then denies all validity on the prices given that the provider has - apparently - no connection with JLR.

Which is good, as the prices it offers are 25% less than JLR Dealerships are currently selling at. £32k vs. £42k for a Base Coupe.

Prep can cost £100s, while JLR sell Extended Warranty for ~£700. But still...

How are prices elsewhere?

Kelly Blue Book says my car is worth $43K for private sale. 2014 V6S with climate and premium packs. New, it was around $85K in June of 2013.

There are a gazillion pricing tools, and I'm sure they vary quite a bit. [A gazillion = a bazillion in the UK. ]

Mileage and region of USA will have an impact. I expect many f types are well below average mileage.

KBB says mine is worth $80k with 5500 miles in a private sale, but all the options weren't available to select. Extended leather was the one I thought might bump it a bit. The dealer trade was around 77k. I've never found those numbers to be reliable for trade in, although a newer car may likely be kept and not wholesaled by dealer.
Most cars depreciate 45-55 percent of their msrp after 3 years with standard 12k miles per year. When I was looking at a Penfed balloon loan I recall they estimated somewhere around 52% after 3 years with standard mileage for my car. One of advantages of Porsches is they hold their value better, but also are discounted less. Also, Pickup trucks, Audi S5 (at least last I looked) are some with 55% plus value after 3 years with standard mileage. Jags are not in that range.

I'm second guess my decision to trade in my XF, versus waiting for private sale as dealers give you a wholesale auction number if they don't think they can move the car.

Should have noted I have 33,000 miles on my car.

There are 2014 model f-types R selling at 40% (or more) off their prices just 2-2.5yrs ago.

In the US, the f-types (r) are dropping quicker than a SR-71 Blackbird in a nose dive. (But that is not too uncommon upon 100k new cars)

An F-Type R 2015/16 now will depreciate at a rate of about $700-$1100 a month for the next two years.

2015 - Exc Cond $67k-$72k
2016 - Exc Cond $72k-$80k

Probably one of the biggest reasons I couldn't pull the trigger on a F Type. I don't tend to keep my cars that long and the depreciation on these things is worse than any other high end car I've seen.

Depreciation is getting worse on most cars. Used car prices have declined by another 4% over last year as a result of a glut of lease terminations spurred by continuing growth of that financing mechanism.

Speaking of Depreciation, the 2013 SL550 could be an all-time champ -- Original MSRP USD$120k, today $45k.

For a very good reason. These SLs came equipped with "sealed for life" hydraulic suspension called ABC. It lasts about the length of warranty then suffers cascading failures that are very expensive to fix. If hydraulic fluid changed every other year from new, they could last, but it isn't part of maintenance schedule so about any used SL with ABC out there is a ticking time bomb.

I have couple SLs in my collection, but starting R230 (2003 and on) they are impossible to keep on the road. If I ever get motivated, I will import SL350 that doesn't have ABC to add to my collection, but they only available in some EU countries.

Yes similar to the Audi R8 Magna-ride shocks leaking; usually post warranty. Or Dodge Hellcats with failing superchargers that are $10k-$12k post warranty to replace.

AMGs are cheap used and out of warranty for a reason. If you find a superbly serviced vehicle, driving it only now and then (NOT as a daily driver), and drive it easy .... then you can be driving around many highly depreciated cars like Mr Big shot .

My buddy is an avid watcher of Mecum auctions and always calls me - 'OMG, a beautiful Bentley sold for $40k!' .... to which I reply, good, because when anything breaks you'll need another $40k to get it back on the road.

You guys make great points about used cars. My impression about Ian era jags is nothing catastrophic seems to be lurking, but time will tell.

How about this one - 2010 Rolls-Royce Ghost, New MSRP $380k, now $119k.

You could buy a house with that Depreciation.... or a $229k Breitling analog clock for your Bentley Bentayga.

The residual values vary greatly, primarily dependent on the model. An SVR coupe with AWD has a 3 year residual of 42% while a base coupe with MT is 76%.

The bigger they are, the harder they fall.

I can somewhat echo this on the AMG front as I purchased my C63 when it was 2 years old and had only 20,000 miles on it. I drove it until it reached 4 years and 6 months old (6 months out of warranty) and 45k miles (daily driver), and when I sold it I felt like I was sitting in a time-bomb waiting for a major repair. The car was rock solid, but I just had this feeling that something was going to happen soon. The most worry causing part felt like the MCT transmission which felt like it was starting to slip.
