Default Revving the engine ....

Guys, why is the revving limited at 4000 rpm. Is there any way to get it to tev higher than the limited 4000 rpm range.
thank you

Yes, just drive fast enough in any gear.

You have an automatic? Just go into manual mode and use the paddles.

So once I'm in manual mode, what would I do push the gear selector into neutral to rev up the engine ?
If I do this, wouldn't it take me out from the sport mode ? I don't understand. Will you please explain.
Thanks.

I dont think it is possible when stationary, never heard of anyone achieving it.

I can only assume it's like this to protect components.

If you're trying to rev the engine while in neutral, there's a limiter. Some models of Jag are set at 3K others at 4K. I know no way around them nor do I understand the purpose of revving an engine past that.

We've discussed this before. If I recall, it's something like the engine needs to be loaded by driving the wheels to remain in balance. Mine doesn't feel very good if I rev it in neutral.

The stationary rev limit is lower so you don't float a valve. That's what I was told. I actually don't know what that means. But it sounds good.

what that means:

- valve float happens when the valve spring isn't strong enough to force the valves closed at higher rpms. The fix in the HP world has been to install stiffer valve springs but that increases wear and friction.

The reality is the engines in our cars won't float the valves until after redline but it makes a logical sounding reason. I think the same thing would be accomplished by setting the rev limiter at any rpm below redline but there is no harm in it being lower.......and it probably stops some owners from needlessly sitting in neutral and revving the engine to redline just to hear the noise! ;-)
