If you're driving in Sport/Manual mode, there's a shift light built into the gauge cluster. The ring around the gear indicator in the center inverts, so it's a black number on a white circle when you need to shift.

I've got a little green arrow that shows when the car thinks I should upshift ...

This is only to drive efficient in manual mode.
The shift-light is to drive fast in manual mode ;-)

I've never observed the inversion of the gear number but will check again - likewise on a green arrow. Are these MY specific?

Not sure. I have a 16 R vert. I have the white background gear number, but have never seen a green shift arrow. The gear number background turns white based on anticipated shift time, rather than RPM, so if you floor it in first it'll turn white around 4500-5000 RPM, but if you're easing on the throttle it'll wait until right near the rev limiter before turning colors. Basically it comes on just early enough to make sure you have time to react and shift, no sooner or later. I actually really like how they implemented it more than a standard RPM triggered shift light. Pairs with the ZF8 transmission tuning perfectly.

My green arrow shows at low revs if I'm pootling along - seems to follow the ZF's shifting logic of early upshifts unless you're driving with a heavy right foot (i.e. "properly"!). When I next get to use my car I'll try the white/black display to see if that applies to my MY.

I see the green arrow. I thought it was MT-specific, but perhaps manual mode for the AT will show it. It seems to indicate that for fuel economy, you should shift up. If I'm driving enthusiastically, I never see it.

Definitely shows in manual mode in my MY18 auto. Not sure it's for fuel economy, as if you floor it the green arrow goes out! As I mentioned earlier, it seems to mimic the ZF's shift patterns, early for gentle driving, redline when driving properly. .

Since all I have is manual mode, mine is active all the time. I looked in my owner's manual and saw no mention of it, but it did mention an amber shift light for automatics in manual mode. From observation, it comes on when the speed, load, and selected gear as such that a higher gear would be more economical. It never comes on when a higher gear would lug the engine at the current load, and it never comes on when the requested power (pedal is only a sensor relaying the request to the system) is above a certain point.

In my handbook it's mentioned in the Warning and Information Lamps section: "The gearshift indIcator lamp illuminates briefly at the recommended gear change point (up-shift)."

As I mentioned in the other thread, that’s what the tach is for. The only way to improve on that is to place a shift light on top of the instrument cluster (tacky).
