The SIM in the armrest connected to AT&T now works, even in the garage, because I responded, yesterday, to an AT&T email giving me the phone number for the SIM and telling me to go to the following to set up stuff:
On 7/21/2018 we used the Navigation feature on a 25 mile one way trip. We didn't enter the destination address, we just looked at the maps on the display as it kept pace with where we driving.
On 7/28/2018 we entered the destination for another trip and let the navigation system tell us where to turn.
I believe that no SIM cards were involved. I had not done the AT&T set up at this time, nor was our cell phone involved because it was turned off.
#2: InControl (this required some set up) (uses SIM card #1 ? )
Around 7/28/2018 I could then log in to the following and see our Journeys, when and where we went, etc.
incontrol.jaguar.com
Based on previous conversations, here, maybe SIM card #1 is involved. I don't know where it is hiding but I am assuming it is not the one in the armrest because at the time we used navigation and when I logged in to incontrol.jaguar.com, I had not receive the email from AT&T and had not done the AT&T set up.
Around 7/28/2018 I downloaded the Jaguar InControl app, before doing the AT&T set up. I was able to use our cheapie LG cellphone and start/stop the car, unlock/lock the doors, see how much gas is left, beep the horn and flash the lights, and I guess a few other things.
Maybe this is using the same SIM card as #2, above, i.e. NOT using the SIM card under the armrest.
#4: ATT myconnectedcar.ATT.com(uses SIM card #2 ? )
On 7/31/2018 I received an AT&T email to do some set up at their website, which was easy.
I think this is using the SIM card under the armrest.
Now, by pressing:
The Settings Gears (at the bottom of the screen)
All Settings (on the right)
Connectivity
Mobile Data
this initially shows "Reading SIM" and then it showed "Mobile Settings" (or something similar).
and then, for the first time, a 3G appeared in the upper right hand corner of the big screen.
This ATT stuff is good for 3 GB of data being transferred or 3 months, which ever comes first, then it is $10 per month.
I have to figure out what this ATT thing is good for, but I doubt we will start a $10/month subscription when the 3 months run out.
Bill:
Two questions:
What is this SIM#2 of which you speak?
Are you sure the data is limited as you indicate? I was under the impression that the service was complimentary for the duration of the warranty period.

It maybe this was only introduced as of MY2017, so owners of older models do not understand what we're on about..
@Fujicoupe.
I've been trying for ages to make this clear to you. Theres a SIM1, used for the INCONTROL/SECURE apps, this is [ depending on the market] , free for a number of years. Or you purchased a package for this 3 year service..
Then there is a SIM2 , wich for MY2017+ is located under the central armrest. This is used to transfer datat for the SATNAV and [ if installed in your car ], WiFi...

Thanks "Bill"
I meant to ask Bill what and where is that SIM card #1 of which he spoke. I am familiar with the SIM card in the center armrest cubby, but I ain't never seen no other SIM card.
#1: Navigation.
Yes, you can navigate. But you can not search 'online' for your destination. If you enter an adress you navigate there using installed map data.
If you want to go somewhere [ 'restaurant' ], not forseen in the map, you can search it online by entering it in the destination. It searches using SIM2.
Also, if you activate traffic data in the menu, it uses SIM2

It's hidden, for obvious reasons as its part of the tracking system of the car.
For what it's worth, I asked my service adviser at the Jag dealer from which I purchased my F-Type is there were two SIM cards in the car.
His answer: "No, there is only one SIM card and there is a USB drive installed by the factory as well . The car only has one phone number. Why would it have more than one?"

@Fujicoupe.
From when is your car ? If its pre MY2018 it probably only has a single simcard. As of MY2018, as far as I understand, and for sure with my MY2018.5 , there are two simcards :
sim1 : deals with the secure pack and control app [ so tracker, location, and telecommand of lock, beep, cabin temp and start/stop , this sim is hidden somewhere and has its own backup battery ;
sim2 : comes with the 'in control touch ' [ and pro] infotainment. The satnav performs basic functions and works with an installed map. For the online search function [eg local gas prices, restaurants], you need a data connection.
To make it even more vague, in some countries there is also a WiFi-spot, working through this second sim. But this can not be retrofitted easily [as I've been told] as not only the firmware, but also the cable to the antenna
and even the partnumber of the antenna are different and NOT interchangeable...
There is NO USB-drive, but an SSD-drive, so build in, not interchangeable, although you can plugin an external USB drive under the armrest. I do not know all the details but the maximum USB size is like 128Gb, not in the order of 1Tb.
Also this SSD-drive comes in two sizes. The full blown 10Gb . If you have that you can, when you select the USB-drive/pen in the media centre as a 'source' , choose to upload to the SSD-build in... Also this I don't have.
The same markets that don't have the WiFi-spot, also have a smaller sized SSD-drive build in, ONLY to serve the SATNAV...
Now, I completely agree with the salesman : the car has only a single phone number, that is for the SIM1 ; this has to recieve and send SMS-coded messsages with which the system is remotely controlled and which sends the
GPS cordinates of your car to the cloud of 'secure' ...
The sim2 is a data sim. It can NOT work as a phone sim. It does have a 'phone number' , but in a range from which providers do not permit calls or SMS send or recieved. It is the type of sim you get from a provider for a tablet.
Now I do not understand the line of thinking to create this system. The two sims are more complicated in hardware and therefore more expensive in parts. Also the different infotainment systems with/without Wifi-spot & large SSD are extra costs ;
you have another part number [also for antenna and cable] and loose the advantage of large production costs. Probably its more expensive in the small numbers these cars are produced, then to just fit them all with WiFi and the
larger SSD-drive. The WiFi spot costs NOTHING to keep, the smaller SSD saves maybe € 20 on a car. Non sense indeed.
But make a list from the standard kit of the basic F-Type. Then go and configere a jag XE or Discovery Sport to the same kit level. The costs of the extra kit you need to get the DS on par with the FT is astounding ; they just
splashed the extra's in to beat the Cayman and TT, as to trim them to the same level would make them far more expensive then the FT.
If you use the security functions mix in a single sim with the WiFi/satnav sim, it could maybe be hacked. This is a subject far out of my league, but I just imagine this may have been a consideration..
What I fail to understand is why they did not allow the WiFi option to at least link to a phone for data-tethering ; then you would not have needed a second simcard in a car the does not have the hotspot...
This is what I distilled from the marketing strategy of JLR, no real logic at all behind it. Just overcomplication by some low ranking directors toying with their pocket calculators pretending they know it all.
FWIW: After the at&t trial ran out, I got a 4G data SIM from freedompop and it works fine - no programming by dealer
Question for you Gregg. Since my 3 months complimentary service from AT&T ran out I was reviewing my options, came across this post of yours and visited the freedompop site. Which of their listed sim cards is the proper one to look into?
If they are offering free internet/phone, how are they generating revenue?

I got this:
LTE SIM Kit - 3-in-1 - Data-only
This 3-in-1 SIM works with any unlocked Tablet or Hotspot compatible with GSM networks. Plug this SIM in, and get Data at blazing-fast LTE speeds.
— and this plan:
Basic GSM 200
Data200 MB
Additional DataUS$0.025 / MB
i think they make $ when you go over (you set up Credit card to charge for overages)
I have been under the limit last 2 months - I figured I would see how first few months go and adjust plan if needed. I mostly drive car Friday-Sunday.
I think this simcard is an excellent deal. I had no other option then a 1Gb subscription, while I don't even have the WiFi, though I do have the latest 'in control touch pro' .
In some markets they deleted the WiFi, like in NL, PT, UK, IRE, to save some bucks as apparently margins are very thin there.
What I find hard to believe as the 'pre-tax' price is lower in CA and there it comes with WiFi...
Why did Jag choose to use a SimCard in favor of a GPS receiver for the 2017+ models?
Nothing on my MY17R. Actually very upset. But only at myself because I did not do my research. Assumption is not a good way to go. My wife and I LOVE to GT the car and on 3 occasions I have been stuck in major traffic. I should not have to stick a phone somewhere for the cost of this car. Rant over.

Waze servers were frequently offline or overloaded this last weekend. The onboard GPS on the ‘16 proved more than adequate to get me home from Maine. Waze actually reported: “no route available” (you can’t get there from here). Maybe the locals aren’t being dismissive when giving directions after all.

Gregg, how did you activate the Freedompop SIM card in your car after installing it? And did your car recognise it as a Freedompop card?
I had a Freedompop SIM card working fine in my XE. It eventually stopped working, and my car did not recogniz the new Freedompop card I installed; it read it as an AT&T SIM card and would not connect.
I'm in the UK and put a VirginMedia SIM in mine. When the car was in for some diagnostics the dealer pressed the assistance call button and it trashed my SIM card - well, it stopped it working. I eventually discovered that it had cleared the Access Point Names fields - I popped the SIM in a spare phone I had and added the APNs again, and lo! it worked in the car again. Maybe that's what's happened to yours?
