Default sim card

2018 ftype r. 3 month trial of ATT sim is over. Is there some way to use the iphone personal hotspot to connect to car? Will any prepaid GSM sim card work?

My MY14 doesn't have a data sim, but our F-Pace does and I expect the answer is the same. We replaced AT&T with a FreedomPop Global sim on their free 200mb plan.* We have found the 200mb limit to be fine for the car's needs (traffic, weather, etc), but we don't use the car as a hot spot for phones/pads, and we don't stream media. Others have simply gone the reverse path you mentioned and let the car work off a phone's connection & data plan. In theory, at least, there may be some reception advantage to using a sim in the car vs connecting through your phone. Some have reported needing a couple of minutes for the car to find/connect the phone's hot spot.

*If you sign up for FreedomPop, you'll automatically be put on the premium plan and will have to remember to downgrade within the 30-day trial period to avoid charges. Also, at some point, they reserve the right to charge you $1 to maintain the account.

I received my freedompop sim (data only) today and got it to work in my 18MY F-Type. I did have to load/unload SIM card several times (not easy to tell when it is in/out - but the settings screen lets you know). I ended up turning car on so the infotainment wouldn’t turn off. Once I got the SIM card in and the settings said loading, I was able to enter credentials.

The initial card loaded by dealer was AT&T, and apparently freedompop (at least in my area) uses AT&Ts network, the main connectivity settings screen looks same.

I had to click on the network provider option, then turn OFF auto-select to enter the freedompop server/credentials:

after it connected first time it showed 3G in upper right. Then when I was trying to set the limit it said sim not loaded. So I turned mobile data off, then back on and it loaded sim and showed 4G.

i fired up the freedompop web page, logged in to my acct, and the usage showed an entry for today - so seems to be working.

i opened nav and turned on Traffic data and am seeing colored lines around streets!

Default Update: I cancelled freedom pop

This was originally a pay-for-usage thing, but apparently switched to pay no matter what thing so I canceled.
