I'm guessing that valves open will call for earplugs. At the local meet set up by @eeeeek someone had something like that. I was standing right behind his car when he started it and I just about jumped out of my skin.

Definitely looking to hearing the difference, which apparently should be quite a bit.

In my case this is going on a 2024 R, which of course has a GPF filter fitted. I’m not touching anything but the back box. Even with this being the case I’m being told by some on the forum that this back box will make a huge difference.

Because of the factory cats and GPF being in play it probably won’t be absolutely insane, but should go to a level that is quite awesome compared to what I have now. Even now I’m quite satisfied with the sound so long as I have the valves open all the time, so I’m expecting quite a bump in volume with this new back box.

I hope it doesn’t take things to a level that is too obnoxious. I don’t think it will, I’m expecting it to go to a level that is close the bump I’m looking for. That’s my expectation.

Just been gather supplies/tool and whatnot, and I’m getting help from a buddy some time in April when he’s available. It’s not necessarily needing 2 people, but by my estimation it will go a lot smoother.

Picked up one of those tools for removing the exhaust from the hangers. That just arrived yesterday. They are not that expensive so I figured I would go that route instead of removing the hangers from the car.

This is essentially all I’ve had a chance to do since returning from March vacation. So, it will go on in April, and the car won’t be out on the road to really see what it’s like until likely some time in May.

In these parts we’re getting a week of freezing rain this week, and there’s still lots of salt around on the road around here until end of April early May (usually).

Definitely curious to see the difference this piece makes.

It is much easier to unbolt the hangers from the car. I have taken my exhaust system off the car many times alone & never had in issue taking it off or reinstalling it. Just speaking from personal experinces.

Definitely appreciate your thoughts. Again, given how cheap those tools are I figured why not? Surely with the right tool and a bit of silicone it will be even more efficient than going through the motions of unscrewing hangers and such? Unless I’m missing something here that you are understanding better because you’ve been through the process? Which is entirely possible…I’ve never done exhaust work of any kind, but this particular job looks super brain dead to me, so I will definitely take it on ;-o

Just to be completely clear, are you suggesting that using the tool would still be more effort/annoying than the hanger unbolting method for some reason?

Cheers

I also have the tool & found it much easier to just unbolt the hangers. That is my personal experience only.

Okay man, roger that. Thanks for spelling it out ;-0 You would know better than I, so I appreciate it. I’ve just been assuming that people were typically dropping the hanger bolts because they didn’t want to order the tool for basically what will be a one time use (more-or-less).

You have any feedback to offer towards how much of a difference I should expect to see with this back box when the valves are fully open vs stock with the valves fully open? It’s gotta be reasonably significant, as it looks to be basically straight-pipe-ish in comparison.

I’m definitely feeling pretty fortunate that Jag’s implementation of their GPF setup on these newer F-types is not that stifling compared to BMW and Porsche and the like (even stock)…Their implementation in comparison turns them into vacuum cleaners ;-0 With this said, I really am expecting a lot from this upgrade.

Do you plan to document the install?

Asking for an F-Type owner.

GerbilEngineer has a lot of threads going right now for various things, one of which is his exhaust install work. In his case he replaced everything front to back with Velocity AP everything, including the same back box as what I have here…He went through things there.

I’m expecting it to be pretty straight-forward, but if I run into any issues I would certainly at least highlight them.

I'll look into those threads. How long was the buying process from order to delivery? Any pre-order waiting period?

I have the impression that it would generally be reasonably quick, but there ended up being some shipping issues with my unit that Velocity AP had to work through. They got me sorted in the end.

Good stuff. I'm thinking about making some exhaust adjustments this summer.

I ordered mine on 11/24 and received the shipment on 12/11, so effectively three weeks. I ordered as part of the black Friday sale, so I would expect mine took a bit longer due to volume. Also, weather.

If all you are doing is exhaust, from the mid pipes back, it's an afternoon job at most. Four bolts for the hangers, and the clamps on the exhaust itself. If you get black tips, note that they are somewhat susceptible to marking if slid on concrete -- don't do that.

Before.

After:

Believe it or not, I wasn't sure about how I was going to like the slash cut tips. I was so used to the stock tips. I knew I definitely wanted black though. Now that I have them installed -- :chefs kiss: The look matches the sound.

@DMeister I expect it to be pretty raucous under full acceleration, with the valves open. The crackle at startup is notably more pronounced -- the vacuum valves are always open on start.

It will take some time before I can get a comparison video, but here is what my car sounds like before.
The first one is from a phone video at the starting line. On the second, I had the exhaust mic'd,

I think that most of the “work” is in making sure you don’t damage the rear valence (wrapping pipes on stock and upgrade unit), getting things aligned, and not over tightening at the mid pipe (55nm).

Gerbilengineer made comments that it was a lot easier having someone at the back of the car taking “up down side to side” direction from a guy under the car when trying to get er’ into the mid pipe, so he deployed his wife ;-0 In my case I’ve got a good buddy coming over. I personally think that having 2 people is a no brainer. It seems like it could be butt pain by yourself.

The other possibility that was mentioned to me by Thunderdump (has same back box) is that there could be vertical alignment issues for the tips in the valence opening. He said it was fine side to side, but that he had to add stainless steel washers under the hanger bolts to drop everything ever so slightly to make it look right vertically? So, not sure if that will play out for me or not. Gerbilengineer told me that he did not have this problem, and he suggested that it is likely down to how well, or not well, the pipes are seated into the mid pipe?

Again, I will certainly update about how it goes for me, and I will add any advice to the conversation that I think is relevant based on my personal experience.

I did buy a hanger removal tool, as mentioned above, but I guess we’ll see if that was a waste of time and money.

What are you considering doing exhaust-wise?
