Sorry for a repetitive question, I couldn't get much help from the search function. Advice on start/stop button sourcing and removal/replacement technique, and required tools on 2014 F type V8s. Thank you.
Plenty of threads and posts around here about this but anyway, I replaced my button a few years ago and learned the following:
1. There are two styles of electrical plug connector on the back of the button, seemingly changed around MY 2016. Unfortunately the ads don't provide any details about which style of connector they are selling so it's pot luck. I was fortunate to get the right one first time, an Ignis (orange) button from a seller in Lithuania. Mine is a MY 2015 so odds on you want the same as I got.
2. After reading up on the various ways of removing the old button I tried using a small/thin plastic trim removal tool to pry/lever the button out and it worked a charm, the button popped out real easy first time so this is the method I recommend.
I'll confess I went the easy/brute force method and pulled out the old button my drilling a small starter hole in the top, inserting a drywall screw with a couple of twists, and pull.
Not elegant, but fast. Pictures are in the how-to sticky.
As a side note, when I installed the new button, I had first given it a top-coat of clear lacquer to slow down the wear. All's good, several years later.
The good rule is use your thumb like you are doing a thumb print and not use your index finger. When you use your index finger (more likely) the button will be scratched by your fingernail.
That's exactly correct. I always do. I purchased my CPO 2014 V8S with 6,000 miles, in 2016 from a McLaren/Aston/Jag dealer in West Palm Beach, Florida. Previous owner was a Lady, as evidenced by the traces of glitter that clung to the steering wheel and other surfaces. My theory is that she pushed the starter button with long nails which chipped it up slightly. I agree, I have only ever used the pad of my finger for that reason.LOL.
As an aside comment. I have so often considered replacing my 2014 with 25,000 miles, with something new. But, frankly, there is nothing that motivates me. A 2024 F type? too tame now. A 2024 BMW M3C, fast but aurally and visually so boring. A 2023 Challenger hellcat widebody...sort of mundane looking, maybe a Cadillac CT5-V?....meeh. Took the Jag out for a spirited, loud, sometimes sideways hooligan drive, without the wife and the top down yesterday, at 78F and I'm back to square one. The looks, rawness, and twitchiness of the 2014 still have me hooked.
Yes but you said the prior owner was a woman and she had scratched the start button?
If she did that how did she get into the car without opening the drivers door with those same long finger nails??

LOL. I never noticed any scratches on the door handles, never considered them a soft touch point like the rubber covered start/stop button. On the plus side, I doubted whether the traction control, stability control button, Sport mode etc, was ever used. In West Palm Beach, these convetibles are considers more of a fashion accessory by women. Which is fine by me.
