Great question, as I am in the middle of the exact same situation. I took the supercharger off to change out the coolant pipes, and several months after putting it back together this noise got worse and worse. So I thought it was the coupler.I bought the car used, and took the supercharger apart to replace the coupler and found the coupler was already replaced! I’ve heard the noise is both normal, and others say it’s not. It’s expensive, but I’m actually sending my supercharger off to Eaton to be rebuilt. New bearings and new shaft. I’m at 60,000 miles so I wanna make sure all is well. We’ll see what others say. Thanks. Good luck.
Here's the problem some times the bearings in the snout go bad, after the rattling of the bad coupler damage happens not all the time but the ones ive worked on the bearings get bad also ,so I would change the snout when doing the coupler for piece of mind ,the snout can had for $126 us Dollars, when I replace a coupler for a members jaguar I change the snout and the coupler, also there's some fake solid coupler out there ,in my video it explains it
Yep, the warranty fix for a rattling coupler was replacement of the entire snout, ask me how I know!
Funny thing is after I had the snout replaced it still rattled (and still does) but at least the "clonk" on shut down went away.
I have never been 100% convinced that the JLR dealership really did replace the snout, no witness marks on any bolts that I can see.
The couplers that i install in members cars are solid by ZZP OR any that are not fake they must fit tight and i mean tight ,the fake ones will slide on easy and melt , took one of a 2016 F-TYPE and this is what it looks like ! after 3 months ,then i installed a original ZZP . You can go back to stock but then you have to pull the snout again ,the one i use is ZZP, ITS lasted a couple years now and the ones I've installed in members cars are quiet and reliable
Fake one
If you suspect SC noise it's very simple to remove the SC belt and drive the car. It will set no lights but it will be a DOG to drive and you will have a much larger appreciation of how much power the TVS blower's add to the engine.
If your interested we have many threads on solid and spring couplers and things have went back and forth over the years. I also have the shut down "clonk" and have for many miles. Be aware the factory Eaton solid couplers come in several sizes and it's not real clear what part number to use. I have the supposedly correct solid Eaton coupler but ran across a great deal on a complete OEM snout that I picked up too. I will decide which way to go when this is swapped out.
