Default Switchable Exhaust

Hello!

I might be in the market for an F-Type since yesterday I had an accident and it seems it might be a total loss T_T
There are many greatly priced S convertibles but it seems very few if any have the switchable exhaust as an option. My question is: For those that have it, how often do you use it? Is it a game changer?
I just want the car to be a cruiser honestly, I'm coming from a Cayman S and realize I don't need the fastest model anymore. Is there a big difference between the Base and the S in exhaust note?

Thanks guys! I hope to be joining the community wiht my first jag!

I do use the "loud" mode on my R when I want to terrorize the neighbors, colleagues in the parking garage, or otherwise want to show off a little more. I'm not really sure what the programming is like for cars without the button, but I have seen aftermarket controllers (one made by Forza) that can give you total control of these valves if you want an aftermarket solution. I think they have an application for F-type.

I use mine on my R a lot. I thought the v6 exhaust was underwhelming with the switchable exhaust open. VAP, a reputable forum after market vendor has an exhaust that should work for you if you can't find one on the car you want to buy. Stuart from VAP can chime in or one of our knowledgeable members.

For me, I'm terribly obnoxious and keep mine in both Sport and Dynamic mode pretty much all the time. I can't imagine not having the louder option, but that's not a big deal to some. I'd say actually drive both so you can hear the difference for yourself and then decide. Mine is a '14 V6S (after the sales person got nervous and asked me to please slow down during my test drive of the V8, and then I realized I don't really have the space to use the extra HP since I live in town and work downtown - 4 miles each way, 6 if I take the long way - I went with the V6), but seems to have most options that were offered, so they can be found. You may have to widen your search area and be willing to travel to it or have it shipped to get what you really want at the right price though. I got mine in West Palm and drove home to Atlanta even though there were others closer.

I have it in loud mode 100% of the time. I wouldn't want a car without the ability to switch.

To answer your question: the normal exhaust sound of the V6 is delicious: on start-up the exhaust valves are open so you definitely cannot sneak away at 2 am, and under acceleration the valves open as well...on cruising the sound is mellow and not intrusive. My V6S has the switchable exhaust but I have used it only once, chiefly because annoying other people is not something I relish. My interpretation of your question is that you would be quite happy with the non-switchable (but it's always nice to have options!)

Realize the the V6S has active exhaust, but switchable active exhaust is an option. Without the switchable option, the valves open up under load in Dynamic mode, so you still get the great sound. You just have to put your foot down to get it.

Annoying others is a bit harsh I think. Yes I joke about being obnoxious, but honestly I get smiles and not the looks of people annoyed. Plus I had someone tell me he couldn’t have a car like this because he’d have a perpetual erection. And that was just hearing me pull in the parking lot. Then again, maybe that’s why Canadians have such a nice reputation since you’re too polite to make others listen to it.

Really I think it’s all personal preference so I’d try it both ways before deciding which to buy. You won’t know without hearing both.

I have two F types, a V6S and a V8S.

Both have the switchable exhaust and I leave it on all the time.

I can't imagine having this car without it.

Dave, on mine, there is no way to keep the valves closed under 4000 rpm (std. mode, exh. button off)

Interesting. With the fuse pulled, mine drones pretty badly with the top up at highway speed, ~2500rpm. The active exhaust document implies that with switchable on, the valves are open more, but not necessarily all the time.

When I first pulled the fuse, I found it louder than I'd like at low speeds with not a lot of throttle, i.e. through neighborhoods. But I find it acceptable now. I suspect my throttle habits changed, and it learned something.

At some point, I may install a switch in series with the fuse, as long highway cruises can be a bit tiring with the fuse out.
