Default Thud/Clunk From Under Center Dash: Solved

Did several searches trying to find similar symptoms on this one without success. So here goes new post. Vehicle: '15 Ftype R Coupe. 19K miles.

Symptoms:
Thud or Clunk coming from under center A/C vents area or firewall. While backing down my driveway in the morning it was so loud I could feel the vibration through the brake pedal. It also clunked when going over smaller bumps. But the biggest thuds were upon initially moving the vehicle after it being parked. It was as if a big, heavy can would fall over under the dash creating a solid thud.

Was able to easily duplicate for the dealer. One day later they returned the car fixed:

"Found noise coming from front right support bracket"..."improperly adjusted". This is the support bar between the firewall and strut tower.

Car is must quieter now-no clunks, squeaks or thuds. I think this was the cause of other dash and door squeaks as well which i just came to accept. It also feels much tighter going up and down my driveway and tighter over turns with angles.

Covered under warranty.

Any chance you have any more info on this or pictures? I'm having this issue as well and I am out of warranty. Please help!

I have the exact symptoms you described. I'll be taking the car in for service next week to address it and this will come in handy.

Thank you.

He's talking about this support strut. One on each side of the engine bay.

Unhingd nailed it. The dealer tightened up those support brackets going from the firewall to the strut (I believe) and cured it. Looks like an easy DIY if you can find the right torque specs.

I check those bolts regularly and I have never been able to budge one, not even a micron, which tells me the correct torque spec is "RFT".
They are Torx T50.

This so so helpful guys, thank you! I think this is a side effect of taking so many driveways at a sharp angle so I don't scrape the front bumper. I'll take a look at those bolts tonight and report back if they are loose or not. I'm crossing my fingers they are loose and that's the solution to this terrible terrible sound.

Well, that was it! Rattle/thud whatever it was is now gone. One of the bolts was loose and I just tightened it up.
Thank you all again for your help!

HA!!!! Both of my support-strut bolts we loose with the driver's side being so much so I could turn it with my fingers. I wonder is some heavy duty thread-lock might help. I will check these often going forward as the smaller strut supports were able to be tightened ever so slightly when checked. I didn't use a torque wrench, just made them tight without going crazy.

How did you guys tighten the bolts closer to the windshield? I cant seem to access them without removing the trim/weatherstripping glue around the front windshield.

thanks

You need only to remove the plastic covers on each side which entails just popping off the plastic fasteners. Pop them up and then turn them until they come out/unscrew. No trim needs to be removed.

Are you sure about that?
Coz on my F-Type the windscreen ends of those two supports/braces go in and under the cowl/trim about two inches inboard of those removable plastic panels and taking off those panels does not give any access to the ends of the braces. I can't tell where or how the ends of those braces are fixed and as far as I can see the only way to find out (and if they are fixed with bolts to tighten those bolts) is to remove the centre cowl/trim piece.

I see the confusion now.... The T50 bolts that are typically the issue are the exposed bolts (3 on each side if you include the smaller strut towards the front). If all those are very tight and your still getting the "thunk" I am going to guess that is not your issue. Two of mine on the larger cross bars were loose enough to turn by hand when I started to investigate. I now check them regularly.

Thanks for the reply!

I have an annoying thud/vibration each time I let off the brake or accelerate (only audible under 10mph). Sounds like it’s coming from front left suspension and I can feel it through the pedals. Generally only happens when the car has been running for a while.

I checked the suspension bushings and motor mounts and they seem normal. The only thing I can think of is the anti-roll bar bushings.

Has anyone else had this issue?
