Question UAD Android Auto/Carplay Stereo Field Issues

Happy New Year, fellow F-Typers!

I installed the Unique Audio Developments Android Auto/Carplay kit into my 2016 F-Type ( with the Bosch unit ) back in July. Everything works and sounds fine... except recently I ran a stereo test track through it and discovered that all the stereo field is not properly separated... Here is the track:

https://open.spotify.com/track/3AfxN...d850ac1921440c

When the track says, "Left speaker" or "Right speaker", it should only play on the left or right, respectively. But they play in the center.

I'm trying to reach them, but I haven't had much luck, probably due to holidays... But those of you with an UAD unit, can you try the above track and post here to let me know if you're getting proper left/right stereo separation from your UAD?

Thanks in advance, and Happy 2022!

Check you phone to make sure that you have not accidentally set mono audio on.

The settings are all correct from the phone's side, and the audio plays properly when bluetoothing to the stereo directly and plugging directly into the aux jack. I guess I'll have to do some digging to see if the android auto unit is at fault... Awaiting support from UAD.

Any other guesses?

Just tried via wireless CarPlay with a iPhone and works perfectly .
If it works when plugged in through CarPlay (ie the UAD unit) it more likely something to do with the android-uad wireless interface. If there was a processing issues with the UAD unit itself then it would still be broken regardless of if it was wired or wireless.
Maybe whilst you are waiting for a reply go into settings and Bluetooth option and unpair and then re-pair the phone connection .
If still not working make sure you are on the latest version for you phone and also the UAD unit.

That's all I got. I have the AAWireless Android Auto module, works perfect with the 20R IMC.

Found and fixed the problem! I went back into the dash to check all the connections and turns out the 3.5mm connection was bad, just enough to give me audio but a bad audio signal.

Sometimes the solution is the easiest one. Thanks for all your feedback and brainstorms!

I am thinking of installing the same unit on my 2017 F-Type with Bosch. Can you give me your comments on how easy it was to install (I would be doing it myself), and whether the unit performs to your expectations?

I had a local (mobile audio installer, top level) guy do the install for 100 dollars, his flat fee. He was done in under 1 hour. No scars/issues/and a warranty of his labor for a year (he pretty much said call me if you have issues). He replaced some scratched up pieces of the shifter area with new parts (oem) from an online JLR dealer too "for free" - super quality work. It probably is not "hard" but having a guru do it just right (mic on a pillar too, looks really nice..but I like foam mike's) made more sense to me. Lots of leather to damage, etc. Expertise to me is worth it even if I "can" do it.

Am very happy so far.

Best.

Installation is not difficult, but it does look kind of messy. You have to remove the screen and install the unit behind it. Connection-wise, it goes between the harness from the car and the head unit itself. It took me about 2.5 hours the first time, but subsequent visits got shorter and shorter.

I found the installation to be pretty easy. You have to get deep into the car and basically remove everything in the center of the dash, but all in all, it was not bad.

I just installed one into my car this weekend. Took less than an hour. Most of the time was doing wire management. It works great with no issues at all

I also have a problem with the 3.5 AUX connection on the UAD. I wanted to use this over the Bluetooth connection for music as I naturally figured it would offer better sound quality. However, when connected to the AUX 3.5mm jack from my phone every 20 to 30 minutes the connection drops out, the UAD display drops out to the default base UAD settings screen, then reconnects in the Android Auto Screen, and then reconnects to music (and Google Maps if also displaying). Now I just use the Bluetooth connection as I simply do not want to gut the center console again to take it all apart again for testing connections. The install can be done at home but there is an extra bulk TON of extra wire mass that comes with the UAD unit. When checking sound settings there are THREE places to adjust sound to be aware of... 1.) The phone sound settings... 2.) The UAD core sound settings... 3.) The sound settings in the base Jag head unit (all 3 will affect audio quality). Now that I just use Bluetooth, I've never lost connection to the unit, it sounds OK, and it automatically connects to Android Auto just as soon as I get in the car. I'm liking the fact I don't have to plug anything in anymore, I just have an extra phone cable to plug into the car's USB port if I want to charge the phone.

One thing to know, on an iPhone xs I occasionally had drop out of the signal near one particular building (makes me wonder what they do in that building to cause so much RF noise). On an iPhone 14 pro that never happens. Just fyi. No changes on the UAD unit....wireless of course.

Are you saying that I won't need to open / rewire the center console if I only connect to the UAD unit via Bluetooth as opposed to the 3.5 AUX port? For reference, I have a 2017 with Bosch.

you are getting confused. For audio out of the UAD unit it must be plugged into the AUX in socket and the factory head unit direct to AUX IN as the music source. To get music from your phone to UAD you must have Bluetooth to do the set up which creates its own wifi network. Once this is done it is no longer required or you can wire your phone to the usb of the UAD

@car5m,
Notice in the F-Type UAD Bosch install video for the IDCore unit, at 9:03 you'll see the unit (at least the one I have from them) with their review showing the connections and the actual Bluetooth antenna...

As long as the IDCore unit was installed as above it should only be a matter of setting the phone to Bluetooth connect to the unit. On my Galaxy Fold 4 phone, the Bluetooth connection device is seen as "IDCORE". And of course, you'll need to program the UAD IDCore settings for Android Auto to use Bluetooth. I see no reason you'll have to take anything apart to try these settings.

Another Tip: Once Android Auto is installed on your phone, MANY of the control functions for the UAD IDCore Android Auto settings are actually controlled in the phone app, such as which apps you would like to add to the IDCore Android Auto screen, and things like setting for "Auto Bluetooth Connect" when getting in your Jag, and even things like "Auto Start Music". Google Assistant also still works with the IDCore microphone via Bluetooth.
Here is a short video reviewing Android Auto Settings on your Android phone...
