to be clear.
the parcel shelf and carpet under the parcel shelf are as dry as they should be.
the carpet on the floor of the hidden storage space in the trunk is wet, and its wet because there is half a gallon of water slopping around below it.
that is the only area of wet carpet.
i assumed there was a commonly addressed leak point and the answer would be well known. alas this is not the case

On the plus side, at least you know you're unlucky, rather than having bought an inherently bad car.

Is it possible that the fuel filler cover drain is clogged by pollen/debris, or that the tube to 'the outside' is disconnected? (If you have documentation that the fuel filler has been replaced for the gas station shut-off issue, then perhaps there is something awry. )

part 1 of diag is complete.
after soaking the back end of the car with the hatch down and up there was a good amount of water in the trunk.
tomorrow i will go through each drain and see which is letting water in, but i think i can safely say that it is a drain at this point.
more tomorrow!

new info.
just came back from the store, its raining out.
when i opened the rear hatch i saw a stream of water fall from around the hatch close button and the hatch lock mechanism.
the water could be flowing through the lock mechanism into the mating part of that mechanism then flowing through into the battery compartment.
just a thought so far....there is a small dent in the hatch and remains of broken glass by the battery and the side window surround is quite "off" so some work has definitely gone on back there, inner plastic panels have not been installed fully either

Well then...you have your answer. This is not a "Jaguar thing"; it is exclusive to a car that has been danaged and not properly repaired. Could the improperly fitted side glass/trim be part of the cause of water ingress?

the window could be suspect, now that i know its definitely coming from above i will do separate areas tomorrow until i find the cause.
my bet is now water entering hatch between window and spoiler, then running through the lock mechanism as i described above.
yes...most likely from a bad repair

Massively blurry at my end, so much so that it's impossible to see anything.
Maybe try taking another pic or two?

And maybe one a few steps back so we have some more context?

The left rear window isn't going to drain into the the rear hatch lid so that ding isn't really relevant.
They probably haven't put the lower rear window seal in when they replaced your rear window

i think it is solved.
this morning i poured a little water into the hatch lock mechanism and it went straight into the battery compartment.

i then lifted the spoiler and i see a large hole on either side which looks like they should have covers on.
pice attached, the right side has nothing there and left side has "something"

The left side "something" should also be on the right side. I don't have a deployable spoiler so can't visualise what the other holes are.

Good troubleshooting!

Now, verify your suspicion by sealing that hole (temporarily) and see if the water ingress is eliminated.

(This might be another example to prove: "Duct Tape can fix ANYTHING" )
