Default What's below the dead pedal carpeting?

I installed a OEM dead pedal today (wtf Jag you can't give me a dead pedal free?), and I mis-drilled one of the holes, and ended up drilling another one right next to it. While drilling, I was curious about two things...what exactly was I drilling through, because it didn't feel like metal, and does the area below the dead pedal get exposed to open air? If so I might consider adding caulk to seal that other hole, even though the plastic rivet covered it.

I believe it's a big chunk of foam. How much was your dead pedal, and do you have the part number?

That's what it felt like, but I hope it doesn't just get exposed to open air, would hate to find critters crawling in from it.

I just got the OEM pedal that everyone already knew about. Got it off eBay for $140.
