not sure about the US market but there are different mirrors fitted on some UK models. My 2016MY v6 coupe (with dimming) has one this \___/ shape but was behind a v8 convertible this morning and it’s mirror was rectangular and larger than mine.

Great clip, thanks! Remember, this is the movie that had an XKE (I think) stranded in the garage for whole race because it failed to start!!

I've got the garage door buttons. When I bought the car I didn't have garage doors, but it was bundled with something else. I don't remember because it didn't matter to me at the time. Now I have garage doors, but the garage if full of a project car and a bunch of of motorcycles, so the F-Type still sleeps outdoors. The buttons work though :-)

I have a worse story with my Mercedes. I always order Homelink because I want the garage door buttons built into the car. On my 2017 GLA 45 AMG it was the first option I selected when I ordered the car. Sometime between when I put in the order and the car was delivered Mercedes changed the bundle and didn't tell me so I could select it. As a result my car arrived without Homelink and they implied it was my own fault sending me a build sheet I'd never seen before without the feature (the build sheet I'd been sent earlier had it). Had to have an aftermarket mirror installed with the feature (better mirror and cost less than half the $1,400 they wanted to retrofit the Mercedes part). I did lose two map lights that were on the mirror though and don't ever plan to buy a Mercedes again.

The mirror shape is designed to match the rear window shape so that you can see the whole window and nothing much beyond the window. Hence the vert mirror is rectangular and the coupe mirror is trapezoidal.

And, thanks to the IR-resistant front glass, only does these things one out of every 100 attempts! I've been able to get it to work with my condo's garage gate exactly once. And even then, I'm not actually sure it worked or if the security guard took pity on me and opened it.

Except garage door openers are RF not IR. Glass really shouldn't make that much a difference.

The new glass thwarts radar detectors and toll transponders, so the IR-blocking layer clearly blocks RF.

I haven't experienced the problem but in looking into it Tesla, Mercedes and most of the current car forums are complaining about IR glass blocking signals. The fix for the toll transponders is either hold it out the window (which is frowned on because it might register the wrong lane) or get one that goes behind the license plate (many States offer this option for free). With the gate or garage remote you'd likely need a Homelink solution with the radio remotely mounted outside of the cab. For GPS they recommend a repeater like this:
Amazon Amazon

In my new Mercedes I just put in an aftermarket Mirror with Homelink in it and it seems to work through the glass just fine as there is a hole in the coating for the sensors right in front of it.

I haven't had any issues with the HomeLink mirror working in our '18 F-Type. For the toll pass they have a section to the left and right of the mirror that doesn't have the coating. Works fine for us with the IL Ipass. Same setup on our Evoque and LR4.
