Auto transmission ATF changing /flushing - Dialysis
I have searched for information re changing the ATF in my auto box and there seems to be few items and some disagreement how to do this.
I have found the Jaguar method and several other methods.
There seems to be the following, in basic terms.
1. Drain out as much ATF as the system allows. Top up with the same amount as drained off. Run the engine, switch off and repeat the process.
This appears to be the Jaguar approach. It dilutes the tired ATF.
2. Other methods involve disconnecting hoses plus draining and topping up at the same time.
3. Power flusher. Using an external pump to force ATF around the system.
4. Passive flush or Dialysis as it is called in the UK. (I think it is a good name for it)
A gentler flushing process. A machine is attached to the hoses and using the cars auto transmission pumps the old ATF out and new ATFis introduced.
If possible, in addition to the above, removing the pan/sump of the transmission and cleaning it, replacing the filter/strainer/ O rings and cleaning magnetic collectors should all benefit the box.
Dialysis is available in the UK using an American machine called Mega Flush.
I enquired and the cost quoted was a total of £216.
I believe about $300 is charged in the US
There are others makes but I have few details to date.
The Youtube clip is by a hands on guy, not a PR/salesman and seems to explain it quite well.

The UK company in the Youtube clip is north of Cambridge and I have found another company near the M25 by the Thames crossing.
Later in my Jaguars life I will probably trying this service.
It is a lot cheaper than a a transmission repair.

So I guess you would need to buy several flush machines to dedicate one to each type of fluid to prevent cross contamination. One for Dexron, one for Mercon V, one for LT71141, one for ZF LifeGuard 6......etc.............
You could drain and flush the machine for each gearbox flush session but I doubt that happens?????
I'll bet that everyone gets Dexron/Mercon and it will be determined that it is better to get the wrong fluid that is 'CLEAN' than to leave the correct fluid that is 'DIRTY'.
Just an observation and a question as to the protocol for different fluids??????

Bob
First find a place that has this or rival kit and then enquire is it Castrol etc. ?
Ask them to use your favourite ATF ( and pay to drain off their regular ATF?)
I am sure you are right.
I am assuming, as I have not seen any mention, that the X Type pan and filter really are for life.
There are lots adverse comments on various forums about sucking old engine oil via the dipstick tube beacause it leaves the thick stuff in the pan but not seen any such comments on here re leaving thick stuff in the auto pan.

The Jatco JF506E does not have a PAN (only a valve body cover) and the filter is a screen in the bottom of the gearbox that is inaccessible for normal servicing. bob gauff
Having viewed several Youtube clips of removing the pan and Filter/screen from other makes of cars I had wondered what Jaguar had "designed".
Some of the systems apparently use "additive packs" that get added to the "universal" fluid. Sort of like "make your own ATF" depending on the make of transmission.
Two words ... no thanks.
Two words ... no thanks.
It was so thick it was proving difficult getting it into the system.
I agree "Not for me, thanks"

I had a mega flush done on my Mercedes om642 powered Jeep grand Cherokee
The box is Mercedes as well it needed a special type of fluid which I supplied
I did the flush when I bought the car 2 years ago
Last month and 45,000K,s after the service 2 years ago I did it again as the box was throwing a few codes it needed an electro plate and shifter overhaul (fly by wire rubbish)
When I took it to the specialist I asked him about the oil he uses for the transmission and if I need to supply it again he said no he then did the electroplate and flush using Valvoline - Automotive Products
I was originally using amsoil as all the merc stuff has number codes on it I am pretty happy with it
With my 95 XJR I usually get the pan dropped new filter and fluid topped up
I usually do this every 40,000 K,s next time the XJR is due I might get it done on the machine like the Jeep
My XJR has 245,000K,s on the clock and feels great
Interesting to read a threads about flushing transmissions I am a bit of a believer now the Jeep transmision feels really tight now
