DSC not available, ABS fault
Hello,
I have a question regarding the ABS system. I have had this fault present for nearly one year. I haven't had the time or money to take the car to the Jag dealership, not to mention that I don't have much confidence as there have been a few times that my fellow forum goers have helped me more than the techs at the local jag dealerships have by solving problems that they weren't able to.
So I was randomly driving and I had the ABS fault signal come on. It had thrown this up a couple times before this and once I shut the car down, it went away and it would go back to normal.
This time it stayed on and has remained on. It flashes DSC not available, then to ABS system fault. Drives normal, other than I can't use the cruise control. I understand that the OBD system does not give codes, and I don't want to get into buying wheel speed sensors and other such electronic expenses without knowing what this exact problem is. I want to try and avoid guesswork if at all possible. Is there a way to troubleshoot this system to identify the problem?
Any info is appreciated, thanks!

Not sure what model you have but wheel sensors are easy to clean. Might take an hour for all 4 they can also be tested for ohms at the sensor and at the connection to the abs module. There is a video on youtube of the removal on an xk.
I can confirm the wheel sensors and reluctor rings (the toothed things on the axle), can give trouble, as I had just this with a Rover 75, ( a small UK car no longer made). The reluctor ring had snapped so the ABS system detected an anomaly when counting pulses off the reluctor ring inputs. The detectors can also give trouble too, like bad grounds etc
Generally speaking it is the simple things like this that give the trouble, not the electronics in the 'black box'. In addition, in your case, there will be fault codes to download and look at to see where the fault may lie. My Rover didn't have things like this, it was down to plain old mechanics "nous" or "knowhow".
So..... go to a Jaguar dealer or independent specialist and get the fault codes read. Also note that connections of wiring looms can deteriorate and give spurious readings, so these should be disconnected, cleaned, and replaced.

mwaggon, like Fraiser said, the wheel speed sensors, the reluctance rings, and or the wiring can all cause what you are seeing. You need to take the car to a professional place that can read all 4 types of codes (P, C, B, and U). What you are looking for is a code that is C11X5, where X is either 4, 5, 6, or 7. In your case, 4 is the driver's front, 5 the passenger front, 6 the driver's rear, and 7 the passenger rear. From there, you know the wheel that is causing the issue.
If you have an X-Type, they suffer from 2 common problems. Either the reluctance ring fails (normally on the rear of the car) or the wiring gets damaged to the speed sensor. I would start there and then see what you have. It is possible that if you have a wheel bearing that is starting to go, it can interfere with the system and cause the problems that you are seeing. But, I would start with the ring and wiring first as these are the more likely faults.

Sorry guys, I thought I had it set in my signature that my car would be there,, I have an S type 3.0 2003.
I have to finish a brake job this weekend and do the tie rod end. I will check the sensors when I pull off the wheels. Regarding the measurement of Ohms, any idea what the range should be?
Thanks again!!
Matt
