By the time the workshop have stripped and examined it, it is almost certain other components will have failed, and the final cost incl strip down, and rebuild will be very large. The big end failing is a symptom of something else.

It might be better to look around for a known good engine, replace the stuff known to wear out prematurely, (like cam chains and tensioners), and swap them over.

What miles on the car ?

Sorry to hear about your disaster with the XKR.

Unfortunately, the cost of properly rebuilding a damaged V8 will exceed the UK value of a 2000 XKR. As has been suggested by Fraser in post #4, a good used replacement engine is a more cost effective option.

It is possible the OP isn't concerned about cost and just wants a referral to a reputable shop for the rebuild. If he likes the car and wants to know the condition of the engine internals then a rebuild makes sense even if it costs more than the value of the car. Hopefully someone answers his original question.

 

That, of course, is always possible and the OP will be able to expand on the situation when following my request in #5 to post an Intro.

The OP is in London, and I suspect not many people on this forum have had experience of workshops carrying out engine rebuilds of the V8 engine. However it is not hard to find firms that do engine rebuilds, here are a couple: -

Engine rebuilds | engine repairs | rebores | cracked cylinder head | recon engine | South East Engine Services

There are plenty of firms that restore the old XK and the V12 engines, of course, like VSE, but their website only mentions the XK sixes, nothing else.

If this were me, I would shop for the 3.9 Lincoln of later years, and use that as a base for rebuilding or would that be blasphemous?

 

Not many of those in England..........

 

I expect the OP has either resolved the issue in the six months since posting the question on 29th May 2015 or has given up. In either case, he hasn't been back to tell us.
