Default Flat Tire

Has anyone taken a look at what Jag gives you to change a tire?

Middle of Brooklyn, a piece of steel, though the side wall of the
tire. ( @5mph) at rush hour. I know many will not understand 'Rush hour'
in NYC. For someone who has not lived ther it would be 'overwelling'
I did get many compliments while I was parked there.

Part-1 I called The number on the Jag card and they did come in 40 minutes as directed. ( very nice person)
But being a person who will do and not wait for some one,
I started to change the tire. The lug nut wrench, in a word -sucks.
The jack, which is a good one, but the handle-in a word-sucks.
The tire is not regular, its one of the temp thing you must stay under
50 and, I think , not over 100miles driving.
Other then that, its fine.

Part-2 Try to find a Dunlap tire for XJ Super Sports on Friday @5PM
in NYC and all day Saterday--you can't.

Part-3 - I had to go with Continertals. Not a bad tire at all and about
$100 less. But still not stocked all over. Had to drive to long Island 23 miles on the spair & not over 50 mph.

Part-4 changing the tire. The whole shop has to look, talk, open, push buttons before they get started.( on the road I found all setting changed)
You'z Guy'z know what you have to do with the slow computer to reset
all. I won't go into that.

Part-5 A week before this I had the Jag in. Rubber in trunk was coming off and wanted check on new tires. I did get new rear tires $1000, but John at service said-- the fronts are ok and since you will be in, in June for the full yearly check up, hold off till then. I did.

part-6 I now have Duns on rear and Conties in front. I can now do a comparison on the tires. Driving back from NYC to Gettysburg (230miles)
I found nothing wrong with them. nice ride, preformed well, no compliants.

Not exactly an Easter 'Holiday' for you. I share your dislike of the emergency skinny spare wheels.

After being caught out many years ago with the toolkit wrench not being adequate to remove the wheel, I always check wheel nuts whenever someone else has removed and replaced them. Not for tightness - to make sure I can remove them if necessary!

First up, I binned the frankly ridiculous OE wheel-stud wrench in favour of this:

And, unless the tyre has taken a 20mm Bofors round, I use this:

And, scissors jacks being the work of Beelzebub, any jacking that can possibly wait until I get home does so, and then I use this:

All of which makes for a happy and relaxed Goose!

Yep. Sometime during the first week of ownership.

I carry a 24" breaker bar and the correct socket.

Did you not notice? The wheel nuts suck too!

I changed all mine to chromed steel only $1 each from Driven Products in

the USA.

I seem to remember you need to pack a socket to suit.

Years ago -getting a new car I would always chech out- test
the equipment and make sure all was work-a-bale.
I have changed jacks before because they were difficult.
years ago I was hunter, fisher, camper, into Custom Vans.
The last thing you need in back country is a flat you can't change.

I alway carry a large can of flat repair-- and its wonderful.
But in this case-- side wall, nothing can be done.

Now thinking back -- the worst part--the tire shop, when they pushed, changed all the setting.
For me the real con to this car-- people looking, touching.
I found in NYC - you put this car next to anything Merks, BMW's etc..
and the Jaguar will get all the attention.

I got an up close and personal look at my spare and tools this morning while hurrying to a Drs. appt. I was slowing from a high of about 90mph after having blown by some midget Kia as I was running a tad late when my right front let go with a muffled bang and some rather strange (<G><G>) vibrations from the front end. It's been 50 years since I've had an actual blow-out, as in catastrophic failure, but not so long as to have forgotten about staying off the brakes and just letting it coast down to a manageable speed.

I was able to limp about maybe 100 yds. to a gas station (no service as usual, just milk and beer) where I had a solid surface free of traffic to work on. I have just recently, about 4 months ago, had my knees replaced with the latest in bionic attire so kneeling was a real treat as I tried to position the disturbingly puny scissors jack in the proper location. The lug nuts had thankfully not been tightened by King Kong so I was able to extract them with the one armed lug wrench which of course required that you actually rotate a complete circle by hand instead of spinning it like you would with a + type lug wrench.

Needless to say I was even later for my appt. but the surgeon is a good guy and ushered me through without an unusually long wait. At this rate I'll b e approaching 116 before I have to deal with another such experience and by then I don't think I'll need to worry much<G><G>.

Unfortunately there isn't enough left of the carcass to clue me in as to what caused the sudden failure but I'm betting on a defective tire as there was plenty of tread and I certainly don't recall having run over anything. I also had a full sized matching Michelin for a spare so at least I don't have to limp around looking for a new tire.
