Default Good solvent to clean AAV

Good evening! I hope all of your are staying safe. I have been working from home for the last couple of days and have advanced SO MUCH on my '85! One of the things I want to do, because it shakes when hot and randomly stalls, is remove, checkout and clean the AAV. I understand a good way to clean it is to soak in in solvent. Anyone have suggestions on what I should use? Thank you and Cheers from rightoutsideofHouston Texas!

I tried:

Petrol, in a coffee jar with lid, left over night, nope.
Paint thinners, same container, nope.
Kerosene, as above, nope.
Brake Clean, nope.
Diesel fuel, nope.

That all led to too many beers, and I seperated the thing, cleaned it properly, and moved on, fresh beers included.

Some claim success, for how long, dunno.

The alloy piston gets scored, and jams in the bore., and no solvent yet created is going to sort that.

Most have an alloy piston, my 1985 AAV had a Stainless Piston, no idea how or why. That was a blessing.

What were the paint thinners ? Cellulose thinners shifts almost anything !

Fraser,

Memory?? General Purpose as a best guess.

The hard carbon "goo" inside was the issue, and the same to the many I have refurbished, 600 Wet & Dry, with Kero as the lube, and Finger applied is the best I have found for the bore.

1200 for the piston.
