Hello. I picked up a Packard that a prior owner put a Jaguar motor into. This came from an estate, so prior owner is no longer around. I'm trying to identify exactly which motor it is and what model it came from so I know what to use to look up parts for. This XK motor replace a Packard flat head straight 6 and is pretty wedged into the engine bay. So a challenge to get to everything. I managed to get it fire over but am looking for a good reference on this motor as there are components that are completely unknown to me vs a Packard motor. Thanks it advance for any information and help that you can provide.

BigKev, if you look at the top of the motor, look for a flat spot (normally at either the front or rear of the engine). On that flat surface should be either a stamped or needlepoint letters/numbers. That is going to indicate the block number. Once you get this block number, you can do a google search on that number and that should reference you over to the series of cars that this engine would have come from. Based on the fact that it is a straight six, you are most likely looking at a 70's (maybe 80's) xj as the most likely donor. But ,the engine number will narrow it down to a few years and a specific model. If you can't find the engine number, then you can pull the valve cover and somewhere inside the valley (again, normally near the front or rear of the head) will be a head number. This again can be searched for on google and that should alos get you to a year and model.

 

I would guess 3 1/2 liter? 3.8 liter? from a MK VII to MK X or something in the 1950s to early 60s.

 

Thanks for the info. The Serial number found between the valve covers on the head appears to be LA1118-8.

So looking at the table online appears to be 3.8L XJ Mark II
Is there any good resource or book on these motors? Just trying get my bearing on what's what with it.

Also, what is this doo-dad between the SU Carbs with thr red wires on it? Ive never seen anything like it.

The electrical device you are seeing that has the 3 red wires, I would venture to guess that is a solenoid (high power relay) that is used to switch on/off the 12 VDC for the car. I tried looking at the name on the top of the device (Arbubette) and could not find any link to what it may be.

 

The 'HISSING CARBURETTOR' is used as a CHOKE on the old engines.

 

The air cleaner is the giveaway. It is the early type fitted to the Mark VII saloons: -

So it looks like your engine is out of a Mark VII which would make it a 3.4 litre engine, not a 3.8.
