IDS_SDD Deep Dive - Getting Started
Disconnecting the battery cables and going through the rectification process did not change the results. The "clunk" sound I hear seems to be in the vicinity of the starter, so that will be tomorrow's project. I hope I can access the starter from beneath the car after I jack it up about a foot or so and get some jack stands under the right side.
No machinery or vehicle likes to sit for months. That is especially true for Jaguar.
What is - a "clunk" sound? Is that the starter solenoid? If so, check voltage to the starter on the starter side of the solenoid when energized.
SDD is a primarily a diagnostic tool, so yes, SDD can read diagnostic codes and reset or clear them.
If you are not familiar with SDD, look for a friend or shop who can help.
As MotorCarMan said, try your other key if you have one.
If you still suspect a security issue, and have no other options, you could try the rectification procedure:
Disconnect both battery cables and touch them solidly together for about 90 seconds.
Rectification depletes residual electrical charges and may calm a scrambled electronic brain.
Good luck.
Keep us posted on you progress/solution.

Problem solved. It turns out some critter chewed up the wire that connects the ignition to the solenoid. It was not an issue with the key or the security system. I reconnected the wire and I am now able to start the car and move on to the next dreaded project - the leaking valley hose under the supercharger. Thanks for the help and suggestions.

Hi Bill
Thanks for starting an in-depth look at SDD. It is a powerful, if cumbersome, tool to troubleshoot, repair, and update our modern Jaguars.
As an alternative to procuring an older PC (which admittedly many people may have laying about after upgrading their computers) to run SDD, I have found installing a virtual machine, hosting an older PC operating system on a more recent computer, to work very well. As a Mac guy, I run SDD V130 on my intel chipped iMac using a Virtual Box VM with Windows 7 Pro. I had a similar setup on a MacBook Air that unfortunately drowned, no thanks to our cat and a vase of flowers in water. For those looking for a Jaguar Land Rover JLR IDS SDD Download, SDD and Windows 7 Pro under the VM have been very stable for me and I have used SDD successfully on my X150 4.2L. The VM is transparent to the operation of SDD and my OBD dongle connected fine as well.
As you probably know, Virtual box is an Oracle open source application that can be used with many operating systems including Windows and Mac OS that may be installed on more recent computers. The VM for an SDD-compatible OS like Windows 7 or XP runs on top of the VM. Unfortunately, Virtual Box is not supported on the later Apple M1/M2 processor Macs. Here is the link to Virtual Box for those that may be interested in an alternative to using an old PC machine.
Also, in addition to the required VCI/OBD dongle, a substantial power supply to keep the car's battery topped up during SDD use is highly recommended.
Thanks again for your initiative.
Best, Mike

There are a number of SDD documents that have been uploaded over the years. Here is a 30 second search and there are a lot!
SDD Threads
It will take some time and effort on your part to study and find what you want. Remember this was never released to the public and was for use ONLY by JLR techs in the dealerships. So there is not as much out there compared to commercially released software.
One big error all new guys make is to ignore the DC power supply requirements. This is NOT an option! Using a battery charger will sooner or later cause problems. That requirement is posted in those thread's as well. We just had a bricked car thread because the shop attempted programming without ANY battery support! The guy finally got it all fixed after a BUNCH of work.
I also use a cheap dedicated laptop because I had to load this a couple of times before I got something that worked. Keep at it as I find SDD frustrating to use.

The top reasons for "Bricking" are:
1. Battery Maintainer issues
2. Loading "empty files". (Red X's displayed for modules indicate failed/communications.)
Always correct the cause of the failed module communication. Rescanning should re-establish communications but it's a good idea to begin a new session.
Never attempt any form of programming (key fob, module, etc.) with any Red X's present.
Exception: Recovering multiple "bricked modules" will require programming one module at a time.
Begin with the Smart Junction Boxes and proceed until all modules are recovered, one by one.
This process will necessarily ignore Red X's for secondary modules.
Do not move forward until the targeted module has been corrected.
Good Luck, share the story of your success.
