Jag 106 glass
It might sound silly but I'll ask anyway.
Can anyone tell me why I have jag106 stamped on all the glass on my 74 xj6l next to the manufacturers mark. I also have another 74 xj6 and it doesn't have it.

Welcome to the forum Frogmyre,
Up until the 1960's, the large scale UK motor manufacturers all sourced their glass from Triplex Safety Glass, the largest supplier in the country.
Labour relations in the motor industry early 1970's were dreadful with wildcat strikes taking place frequently at both the motor manufacturers and their suppliers facilities.
Motor manufacturers had to safeguard their production and began to source components from alternative and less troubled suppliers. The next major player in the European safety glass industry was the Italian Sicursiv company. Jaguar sourced a large proportion of their requirements from this company for some years. At that time, I was working for a smaller UK safety glass manufacturer and almost our entire production was going to Ford Motor Company at Dagenham.
Each manufacturer has their own way of code stamping their glass to indicate several factors including date of manufacture. In the 1970's, Triplex used a series of dots. Your 1974 with the 'jag106' is likely to be from an alternative source to Triplex.
You should have no reason to worry as all motor vehicle safety glass has to be manufacturer to the appropriate standards and Jaguar would use nothing for OE fitting that wasn't to BSI (British Standards Institute).

Hi Graham, thanks for the reply.
I thought the glass may have been sourced from a different supplier so I checked the stamps and they are both from Triplex glass, in fact the stamps are identical on both cars only the L has the jag106 stamped on the glass as well. It's larger than the writing on the Triplex stamp and not always the same distance from it, almost like it's been an after thought. The only jaguar reference I can find with jag106 is a paint code, that being old English White, but it doesn't explain why it's on the windows. The car is red by the way.
Anyway, I'm not concerned just really curious.
Thanks once again for your reply. I'll make my way over to the new members area and introduce myself as suggested.
Cheers, Wayne

That's a familiar sight. It will be a PO's vehicle registration number acid etched into the glass.
This was very popular in the UK a few years ago as a theft deterrent. The reasoning being changing all the glass is a lot of work and expense making the vehicle less likely to be stolen.

Graham
