Default Jaguar PDU OBDII Cable vs. MPA

Hello,

I've gotten my hands on a couple PDU's and a non-working base station, which I repaired with a working Sony CD-ROM drive.

I've got the VIA and the MPU and the cables for OBDI Jags, along with software through to 1999, and the units work well with my '92 XJ6.

I've acquired a '96 XJ12, however, and I can't seem to get the unit to communicate with the car.

I have the MPA, and connected it to the vehicle and the PDU, but I have a feeling the MPA was used on later models, like the S-type and XK8. Perhaps the MPA is for CAN-bus equipped cars?

From what I'm seeing in the diagrams, I'll need a cable that directly connects to the OBDII port on the '96 XJ12 right to the PDU's data & power connectors, like the cable for my '92 does (the '92 only uses the data port, though. Power for charging the PDU comes from the vehicle battery, not the diagnostic connector like the XJ12)

I've made a diagram for the car's OBD port, and I was thinking about making a cable. I know what the pinout is for battery voltage (switch and unswitched) and chassis & signal grounds, as well as the K-line and L-line, which actually connects to all the control modules in the car.

The issue is finding out which pins I need to connect these wires to on the PDU end of the wire. I have a few spare PDU cable connectors, but the issue is with the pinout.

Has anyone attempted this? Any ideas at all?

Thanks,
Nick

There were several connectors for the PDU.
There were 2 for the early OBD cars and then the later cars had the OBDII connector.

The MPA was needed for some cars and the PDU will tell you when it is needed.

The OBDII serial communication data link diagram is outlined on page 21.1 of the 1996 XJ sedan electrical guide.

ALL the wires are identified.

The OBD II cable splits into two at the PDU end, correct? One grey connector for data, and one purple connector for powering the PDU, right?

The problem is that I need to figure out the pinout on the PDU grey socket to find out what pins to connect the OBDII data line wires to

Thanks,
Nick
