Unhappy Key Cutting & Programming

I'm thinking of buying an expensive key programmer and cutter. I am just wondering if others in the Jaguar community would be interested in having keys copied at a much cheaper price than the dealership charges?

I called a few places in the DFW, TX area and the range to purchase a key and have it cut for an X-Type is $250 to $450 each. There is a guy that will program your RFID key if it's already cut for $55.

I've been looking into a key cutter and programmer and do not see any reason a key cannot be made (key/fob combo) for around $125. Providing there is already a key to copy the RFID coding from. Is this reasonable or out of line on anything that you know is out there?

I bought an X-Type that came with only one key and really want a backup.

$125 instead of $250 is pretty good. $125 instead of $450 is brilliant!. Let me know when you have it the cutter and I will be a customer.

And if anyone in Bay Area needs keys programmed, and your car can be config with a WDS (98-06ish?), give me a ping off list. There's a place in So. SF that will cut for somewhere around $80 and I can program to your car.

Default Key program for XJ8

I have a 2001 XJ8 in THAILAND and a 2002 in CA and need 2nd keys for both.

I have been told by Dealers in the US that the car and the key and the computer program have to be together to program the 2nd key.

I live 600 mi round trip from the dealer who wants $300 to program the extra key and remote. They also want to "check" the car to see if it needs other service which is an excuse for them to charge me a bigger fortune!

There are plenty of guys with the MB and BMW programs locally but not the Jag software. I bought a key on eBay and had it laser cut: it opens the doors and turns in the ignition but will not start the car.

I have the 2nd remote too.

Does anyone have the program that I can use once here in Thailand? or other suggestion or the ideas?

In the US the dealer tried to program the key even exchanged it for one from its own inventory and could not get it to work. They say the electronic interface may need to be replaced. They got the remote programmed, spent 3 hours on the key issue for $75 which was fair; Jaguar Newport Beach (when you can say something nice...)

Thanks

Just remember that's only in North America. Most, if not all other areas in the world DO have immobilizer keys on the X300.

Cheers,

Hi. Guess I'm too new here to send private messages, so for now I'll just reply to the thread.

Adam, I'd like the info for your guy in ChicagoLand. Just bought a 2000 XJ8 VDP and so far it's only affliction is having just the one key. Checked dealers in a 2 hour radius for pricing, and that ain't happening soon.

Thanks,

You should get your gear set up in a van and make a tour of the US. I bet you could have miles of Jaguars lined up everywhere you stop. I know I would be in line if you visited the PNW.

I would get in line, too - but only if you can cut and program the key/fob for a 2003 S-Type so it will work on my 2003 XJ8 - is that possible?
