I've recently bought an xkr which had been sitting in a barn for last 6 years. the computer keeps telling tgerere things wrong even though I have no problems when driving it.

is there anyway to reset this or a possible mobile engineer that could deal with this in the south beds area you may know of

I think, therefore I could be wrong, that to clear the actual codes you have to discharge the capacitors (fancy word for batteries) on the ECU unit. In some models you can do so by disconnecting the negative battery terminal, and briefly touching said negative to the positive battery post. It sounds like you are shorting your battery but this is not the case: you are not making a positive to negative connection (- post to + post) you are giving the negative on the car a path to ground that discharges the capacitors.

If I'm wrong feel free to yell. If I'm right let me know.

 

Generally that will NOT clear codes. Worse, it clears the OBD monitors needed for smog checks etc in many places.

To clear (PCM) codes you need a proper tool but even better the codes self-clear if you fix the fault!

For other modules you generally need a proper (OE-type) tool.
