Default Poorly treated S-Type R 4.2. She needs some TLC.

I have been tasked with giving some much needed TLC to a friends S-Type R 4.2. The original fault was the coolant pipe underneath the Super Charger had failed but the person who replaced it changed none of the seals, sheared a bolt, missed out nuts and now (very unsurprisingly) he is getting error codes and limp mode every other day and sometimes every day. I have not got the numbers infront of me, sorry, but the descriptions are EGR malfunction, lean on bank 1 and lean on bank 2.

I have stripped it back as far as the EGR valve and the EGR valve looks OK. I have cleaned it anyway and now to reassemble the whole lot properly with new seals. The seals that I can see thus far are:

1) 3 on the EGR valve and pipework to the exhaust manifold.
2) Throttle body assembly
3) Super Charger Outlet. This is held on by 4 bolts and connects the Super Charger to another butterfly valve next to the main throttle body. This was were I found a sheared bolt, the gasket here is rubber and about 6" square and I can't believe it wouldn't have leaked with only 3 corners held down.
4) There are 1" pipes/conduits that connect the Super Charger Outlet to the coolers and they appear to have rubber seals as part of them. Can I reuse these or are they to be replaced also?

Are there any seals further down/underneath the Super Charger or can I stop stripping here?

Finally there was a pipe left/fallen off. The pipe goes from the Super Charger Outlet to a control valve. The pipe is only 12" long and small, about 8mm diameter. I don't even know what it does but it is now very loose and will also be replaced while I am doing it. Just to educate myself a little I would be interested to know what the function of this pipe is.

If I have missed any seals please shout up as I would hate to do all this again for 1 seal missed out and I can post photos if my hopeless descriptions have left you confused.

Well that is about it folks. Clearly this is the first time I have worked on a Super Charged Jag but any advice on nursing her back to health would be very gratefully received.

Very last thing is the engine under tray was damaged a few weeks back and needs replacing. Jag want over £200 ($300) for a piece of plastic and so I am looking for a second hand one. Are the engine under trays on these Super Charged V8's the same as the standard V8 or are they different? Obviously if they are the same it makes finding a second hand one a lot easier.

Thanks all
Mark

Do yourself a favour and download jtis and jepc from this site, lots of exploded diagrams and step by step instrictions

Well done for helping!

I expect the undershield is the same but am not sure.

I think it was ttwotees who posted about that hose and may have also posted about gaskets etc - worth a look.

At this late date and with the feed back we have had on this list. I would replace the EGR valve and the tube connecting it to the exhaust manifold.

Usually you have problems getting the EGR bolts off anyway and will need to replace them.

Can you post of pic of the pipe you are talking about? I have replaced the hose beneath my s/c, and he must have really half-assed from the sound of it. How bad is the sheared bolt on the intake elbow (the part between the throttle body and s/c)? I know there is one currently for sale in the classifieds (located here in the US), but it might be a better idea to pick up a used part than trying to retap that one.

My local jag dealer has been great and we have all the parts identified except 1 that does not shown on JEPC. The pipe goes from the rear of the Super Charger Outlet to a valve on top of the right hand inlet manifold.

It will 260mm long and red arrows point to each end in the photo below. If anyone can supply a part number I would be most grateful. The throttle body and elbow are removed in the picture.

The diameter looks identical to the pipe that runs the Super Charger Bypass valve but it is longer.

Just an update to say it has been found and to perhaps help someone else who gets stuck.

It was a vacuum hose that feeds the fuel pressure sensor on the rail, because it came of the Super Charger Outlet everyone was looking at all the air related diagrams.

Anyway the old girl is rebuilt now with all new gaskets and pipes and she runs like a dream.

Take care all ...
