What is the purpose of the small light that occupies the top 25% of the two high beam lights on the 2004+ XJ series cars? They are not turn signal lights, they are not daytime running lights on their own, etc...

they are for looks.

 

They are actually called side lights. In the UK when you turn your lighting switch to position 1, the side lights would be on. In the US, the parking lights come on but with Jag the side lights were already there so cheaper not to redesign them.
