Default Rear wheel bearings

About to replace rear wheel bearing on 94 xj6. I am told that only the driver's side need replacing. SHOULD I replace both sides or just the bad side?

Hi Jesse,
As with brake pads, if one side goes, always change both sides. That way you are sure to be safe and have a known base line for when the bearings may need doing again.

"Always" is a bit of a dangerous word. I'd replace it with "If you have extra money and enjoy unnecessary extra labor, always replace both sides at once"

I see no reason to summarily replace both sides becuase one side has failed.

For just one example, I replaced the RH rear wheel bearing on my XJR at about 75k miles as it was loose and noisy. The left side is all original and remains in quiet and perfectly snug at 150k miles.

I had to replace the LH front wheel bearings at 30k miles but the RH front bearings are still in great shape!

Just my 2-cents.

Cheers
DD
