Default rear wheel squeaking

I own a 1988 Jaguar XJ6. I am noticing that a squeaking noise originates from my rear wheels. It seems to occur when I traveling at about 30-45 mph. Anyone have any ideas as to what may be the cause.

This is my first post so if I have omitted some protocols.....apologies. I'll be better next time.

Morgan,

WELCOME to the forum. When you get time, drop into the "New members area", and do an intro.

Couple of things I have had squeaks from in the past are:

1) Brake pads dragging on a lip on the disc rotor.
2) Half shaft uni joints grease nipples have not been greased for many years. This is soooooo common, as most people dont even know there are grease points there.

Welcome to the forum Morgan,

Grant has already given the two most common causes of this squeaking. Add to that wheel bearings starting to go.

When you get a minute, please follow this link New Member Area - Intro a MUST - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the New Member Area - Intro a MUST forum and post some info about yourself and your vehicle for all members to see. In return you'll get a proper welcome and some useful advice about posting to the forum.

Does the noise occur at steady throttle, cruising at approx 30? You can do some crude driving tests to help steer the diagnosis.

If it occurs at steady throttle, try letting off the throttle slightly then applying it. Feather the pedal and see if the noise modulates or stays steady.

While making the noise at steady speed, try quick steering slightly from one side to the other. Does the noise go away when one particular side of the car is loaded?

While making the noise, lift the hand brake slightly. Does the noise go away or change. Try the same thing with the regular brakes, but just barely push the pedal to see if the noise changes.

This can be caused by many reasons such as a failing wheel bearing, faulty brake pad, dust and dirt, etc. A qualified mechanic, with the right tools, will be able to diagnose. When the brake system is compromised we recommend that you take your vehicle to the closest Kia dealership service department or a Kia authorized mechanic right away.

Welcome to the forum randy43,

That's an unusual recommendation.
