Default V8 4litre engine..which model did it come from?

Good morning all. Hopefully I'm doing this in the right area. I'm looking at a v8 engine, I have the engine number, but have no idea which model jaguar it came out of. How can I find out the vehicle model/ year etc it came from? Thanks in advance

Welcome to the forums Dudong,

YES - just the place for this question.

The engine number will tell you exactly WHEN it was built to the minute but not the MODEL in which it was fitted. A V8 could have been in any one of several four door or two door models. Only the VIN will indicate exactly which one.

Technically ALL 4.0 V8 blocks can be assembled to AJ26, AJ27 or AJ28 specs.
The heads, upper structural sumps, cams and a few other parts can be swapped around to make anything you want.

I have a 2002MY AJ28 block in my 2000MY AJ27 XJ8 with all components swapped to make it compatible.

Mix-and-match is OK as long as you know what you are doing.

I'm trying to verify the engine number of my 4.0 V8 on a just acquired X-308 against its registration document.

I've previously located the engine number of my current vehicle X-100, and the number is embossed on the left-hand-side bank quite deep down and facing upwards towards the front of the engine.

Can anyone please show me a picture to pin-point me to locate the engine number?

TIA

EARLY V8 blocks are stamped on the left side near the thermostat tower flange on top of the block.
