VIN Decoder Help
Good afternoon. Does anyone know what digit in the VIN refers to the Engine for Jaguar? I don't want a specific VIN decoded, but would like to know if, for example, the 5th character in a Jag VIN is what refers to the engine type/size?
Beyond that, is there an active list somewhere, of what VIN codes = what engine types?
For example, assuming the 5th character is the engine I'd like something that tells me that:
A = F-Pace etc...
B = F-Pace Diesel
C = XF 2.0
D = XF 3.0
etc...
Any help is greatly appreciated!

Welcome to the forum pmanning,
The Jaguar VIN decode has had a few changes over the years. For recent models prefix 11 is used for the Assembly Plant and Model Line (Engine).
Here is my 2014 XK decode as an example:
Not much variation on this model where the only engine options are the 5.0 litre N/A or 5.0 litre S/C. The current XJ range offers more examples:

Phil, what year and model Jag do you have? And what market?
There isn't a single universal VIN language. There are different VIN conventions, where different characters/positions have different meanings. Most commonly the differences are the result of market-specific regulations.

Phil, I suspect the 5 or 6 refers to the engine code, which would be the 8th digit of your USA VIN...as seen on the windshield tag or sticker in the door jamb.
Your '88 XJS, assuming it was originally a USA car, has two VIN numbers. You'll find one of them on the cowl/firewall, about where the two diagonal fender braces join together. I call this the "born with" VIN. The second VIN is on the windshield and door tags, as mentioned, and on other labels throughout the car. This second VIN was assigned to USA cars to meet USA requirements. The two VINs are somewhat different and the different positions represent different things. I'm fairly sure that Canada and Mexico adopted, at some point, the same VIN convention as USA....making it a North American standard.
Cheers
