Default Can I upgrade a 1998 VDP engine with a 2000 or newer engine??

My engine is knocking like crazy. My mechanic wants to replace the engine. In doing so, I'd rather add a newer model engine like a 2k. I'm sure this is possible but would like to hear suggestions or if anyone in the forums has done it succesfully. I'd like to stick with a jag engine and not a modified chevy LOL!

I'm no mechanic, but they're the same engine. I'd go with a late production 2000 or later to avoid the Nikisil issue and I'd also ensure you also change up the chain tensioners with the metal ones. Other than that there should be absolutely no issue using a different model year engine.

The AJ26 and AJ27 engines are similar but not the same. Do a search on this forum and you will find all the info you need. I can be done but you will need to swap alot of parts from the 1998 AJ26 to the newer AJ27.
Intake cams, front cover, VVT components, torque conveter drive plate, intake assy, etc.

Thanks Bob,

If I need to change all those parts with the AJ27, I'd rather upgrade to the 99 AJ26. Parts are really expensive. Would I still need to swap the engine computer as well? I'm hoping not. Thanks for all your help.

if all you have is a lower end knock i believe i would just get a shortblock and swap all of your components on to it and reinstall your motor. wiring harness and computer are both different if i remember correctly.
