Diesel Tuning Kits

Diesel Tuning Kits
I recently splashed out and, took the plunge, whatever you want to call it, and got myself my first ever Jag, an x-type.
Its the 2 litre Diesel one, 130bhp, and so far, I am totally gob-smacked but it.
Thing is I've seen these kits they say you can install to up the bhp, torgie and reduce your fuel consumption. It all sounds too good to be true, even the 20 minute installation claim that any muppet (insert me) can do.
Has anyone used one of these ? Can they recommend, or advise of any pitfalls and such, I mean am I going to ruin the engine ?
I'm interested, especially in the 15% fuel efficiency claim, but as I'm new to diesels and Jags thought I'd sign up here and look for advice.
Cheers in advance

Hey spaceman, nice choice on the X type
2.0 is good but the 2.2 is just a little better performance wise although yours will be no slouch either and give great mpg returns.
You can go for a tuning kit, but why not just get it remapped and be done with it?
I've had most all of my recent diesels chipped....Saab 93 from 150bhp to 176 bhp....Ford Mondeo STTdci from 155bhp - 195bhp and the Audi A6 from 140bhp - 176bhp
All without doubt have been successful, hence why I've done it again and again. You would I'd say be able to go from 130bhp to around 163bhp ( work on around 25% ) with noticeable gains on torque too. It should really put you into the 2.2 territory for a lot less money and keep the car you already have. Probably looking at £300 - £400 cost but if you do decent mileage, especially long journeys will see around 10%-15% fuel economy too.
Recent example - My Audi A6, took it from Glasgow to Derby, on to South Wales asnd back to Glasgow, mostly all motorway and nearly all at 75mph on cruise control, thru roadworks here n there for a few miles at 40mph and a few reall blasts thrown in to ease the boredom
I got 690 miles + reserve telling me I had 45 to go...a total of 735 miles on one tank
When I filled up computer told me if I drove essentially the same journey in the same style I could expect 915 miles on one tank of fuel
Good luck

I'm certainly not saying anything bad about the ebay ones, but I understand some of them only fool the ECM into thinking the engine is still running on a 'cold' setting.
Turns out a bloke at work is also looking at getting one of these and he sent me a load of stuff to read.
I'm going to spend a little extra I think and get one from Chip Express.
Maybe its just me, but they seem to calm me and answered all the questions I have.
That said Jim, I really appreciate the advice and experiences you've had. Thanks mate, at least now I'm a little more comfortable and confident in getting one.

No problem spaceman...you have to go for whatever you feel comfortable with
My A6 basically had the ECU remapped from new and is now at 67k miles with zero issues. The Mondeo ST tdci was done from around 37k miles and again I had no issues to report.
My Saab 93 was remapped at 15k and I sold it at 80k miles with again no problems to report.....just smooth power upgrade and improved fuel economy.
Please give us feedback as to how you get on.....looks like you could be getting around 35 extra bhp + plenty more torque too....ALL GOOD!

Oh yeah the insurance will be informed. The idea is to tell them in my case its something to improve fuel efficiency and see what that does.
As to how many tell their insurance, I'm guessing VERY few, as part of the beauty of these are that they can be removed in minutes and once removed the original ecu map is used, no trace of it.

Hi, I'm a newbie to this forum and I've just registered ... after googling for any reviews on these tuning kits.
After reading some of the comments, I've just ordered an Express Chipset for my X-Type 2.2d S Manual, the chipset makers/suppliers in Hartfordshire in the UK boast performance from 155bhp to 195bhp.... for the cost of £399.
I'll report back when received and fitted.
Cheers

The Express Chipset was fitted today, it was fairly simple once I knew what I should be doing and after reading the instructions that came with it, took me about 20 mins but should take less than 10 mins if you're accustomed to engines....& knowing what you're doing.
I've only took the car for a short drive today with the missus so far, on slow country lanes around Gower, however, 1st impressions are very good indeed, the engine seems smoother, more torque and keener, the idle seems to be up very slightly by around 50 rpm (appx 800rpm before and 850 rpm now).
I can't wait until I get the car out on my own and open her up on some nice fast roads in South Wales......
I'll report back when I do.
Cheers

Chiptuning for Jaguar – RaceChip Chiptuning
i am seriously considering this.. their setup looks quite professional, and considering the price we paid for the jag, was wondering if i should even take a gamble on the ebay sets.. .lol..

My local Jaguar Specialist didn't recommend fitting a tuning chip due to his past experience with some other tuning chip makes, although he's not come across the Chip Set Express make before.
I've had it fitted for a couple of months now and can report only good things:
Extra power
Smoother running engine
No noticable decrease in fuel economy/mpg
However, I've had the hydraulic clutch release bearing which couples onto the dual mass fly wheel go on me since fitted.
This meant fitting a new clutch plates (although that was getting thin/due for replacement) fly wheel and bearing to the tune of £1.250.
Whether fitting the tuning chip (and driving more aggressively) had contributed to the failure, we don't know, but it can...
I would recommend fitting this chip make as the car is faster and nicer to drive ... but with the following provisos:
Have you got more important things to spend your money on?
Beware the wear and tear consiquencies of aggressively exploiting the extra performance
I've still not had the chance (traffic free& weather road) to take it to max/top mph yet, but if and when I do, I'll report back.
Cheers

Long test reports back.
First, answer a previous question:
The Chipset works with the existing management system (fits in with) and does not replace it, nor is it a re-map of the original system.
The car is engine is still running well, it's faster than the standard 2.2d and MPG is still pretty much the same as standard (high 40s to mid 50s mpg) ... unless your hammering it often (circa 40mpg).
I've not had the bottle to take it past 136mph due to bends on dual carriageways & traffic on these UK roads, ... but what I do need .... is a set of good brakes!
Any suggestions on a good but inexpensive set of brakes
Cheers
Joe

I had the Ford version ST Tdci with the same engine and remapped from 155bhp tp 195bhp and it was a monster, had it at 145mph
Yes, better brakes are a must if you're going to be using those extra horses fairly often, I'd recomend looking at EBC Redstuff and perhaps the drilled / slotted discs to match.
They perform really well and look fantastic on the Sport too, giving it another nice little touch visually
