The 3 litre V6 petrol, as fitted to my car and the S-type is a superb reliable engine originating from Ford USA, and was/is used in Fords in the US, plus Jaguars, of course. I am not aware of any particular weak points, there must have been many thousands of these engines produced by now.
If you are looking for a 3 litre V6 S-type, this engine is the least of the things you need to check out, apart from the usual checks on regular maintenance and oil changes which so many owners seem so cavalier about.

The main concern for the MYs (US) 2000~2002, is there is a vacuum elbow located under the lower intake manifold that fails. Its not a question of if it fails they all do.
Not a huge problem for the DIYer but the upper intake (plenum) has to come off same with the lower intake to replace.
All plastic vacuum lines are also very prone to cracking as well.
The infamous IMT O-ring fails on all 3.0s until the MY 2006 and up, but this is up for debate simply because its about time for those MYs to start failing. MYs down had yellow O-rings installed the new improved are green. BTW it an easy cheap fix.
The timing chains have issues as well, prefacelift V6s used plastic tensioners that fail.
If you talk to the S Typers most long standing members here will tell you to look for a 2003 and up. The most recent facelift started with the 2005's.
Lots and lots of information found in the S Type FAQ thread: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...ype-faq-41364/
Edit: the V6 is a Duratec based motor, Jaguar added their intake system. It consists of the IMT (Intake Manifold Tuning Valves). Again great write ups with pictures in the S Type FAQ thread.
Personally, I find it a very strong motor as with other V6 members.
Good Luck
