1966 MK10 Gearbox problems
I recently had problems with my MK10 and as a result had the engine & gearbox rebuilt. The engine is fine but the automatic gearbox seems to have issues.
1 - The gear changes can be very 'clunky' when the oil is warm, it seems OK when cold though. I have heard that this could be classed as 'normal' but in a car like this I can't imagine this being so.
2 - Under reasonably hard acceleration there's a knocking from the transmission tunnel. It's as if the gearbox and/or propshaft is hitting the body. I checked the rear gearbox mount against what's in the manual and it seems OK but I can't stop thinking there's a part missing. Isn't there usulaay a washer with a split pin through the mounting pin? This would lower the gearbox by about an inch. See photo of my car and a drawing of the manual g/box mount. Also the rear upper engine mount (in front of the heater) seems, to me, to have a lot of thread showing - about 3/4 inch.
Can anyone suggest a solution or even if my car is set up correctly.

There is no pin--that was for assembly and maintenance. The clunking is no doubt the prop shaft middle bearing--the car has a 2 part drive shaft and when the mounts are failing or improperly aligned they make a heck of a noise on accel. As far as the clunky shift I would set the accel linkage to the manual --there is a tech bulletin that came out to improve performance but clunky was not an addressed issue. Are you sure your fluid and filter are in good condition?

Thanks George
At this point I have to assume that the propshaft/engine/gearbox was all reassembled correctly as it was done by a Jaguar specialist although I have yet to contact them to verify. I am now 1000 miles from them so I'll have to resolve any issues.
Clunky shift - Also have to assume the linkage was done correctly. The g/box was rebuilt/conditioned by a specialist so would expect the filter & fluid to be good. The fluid is a nice pink colour.

The arrangement is very similar to what I had with my XJ6 Series 3. First thing is - what is the rubber insert like in the mounting ? These do wear out and need replacing. Secondly, I think I had something similar on my car after it was reassembled, and there was an instruction to move the middle propshaft mount across to the offside of the car until the shaking disappeared. Finally there should be a coil spring around that pin above the mounting and a rubber spring seat. The seats also wear away. Both rubber parts are still available.
I can't remember when the engine stabiliser mounting at the rear of the cylinder head is supposed to be set-up, but I suspect it is the final job after the engine and drive train is installed.
