Default Bumper Guard Option on 67 420G? Purchase advise

I’m interested in getting a Mark X or 420G. One has become available within a reasonable distance and I may go look at it. Car has a claimed 35,000 miles, but appears unrestored and is a decentish driver. It’s by no means a show car. Supposed to be from Florida originally.

I have a strong background in muscle cars, I know only things I’ve read or seen on YouTube about these cars. I do think this could be a fun car for me and my family.

I’ve never seen one with these tall bumper guard things on the front and rear. Looks factory, but I really can’t say. Seller thinks they were factory. It’s like a big hoop above what I normally see on these machines. Anybody have any insight?

What are some things I need to check specific to these cars? I can do a general inspection, but what would be deal breaker type stuff? I asked if both tanks work, have not heard back yet. We’ve been taking over email so far, I have a few pics so far. I’ll try to upload.

Thank you in advance!

Did these cars not come with seat belts? Seems several I’ve seen listed in past year don’t have them.

Do these have a limited slip diff?

Car has factory AC, not working of course. Both tanks work. Going to need tires.

has had a basic wake up, with hoses, fluids, etc.

Any thoughts fellas?

I had a MK10 about twenty-five years ago.
Those upper bars are not factory original. They would attract a traffic fine here for obscuring the rear number plate.
From what I can see in the photos the colour looks like Regency Red.
I think the tyres were 14 inch.

Hi JaguarOrNoCar,

I'm am no MX10/420G expert but I do know enough to get myself in trouble. LOL So, lets start:
1) bumper gaurds, As Bill said they are NOT original, they may be AMCO aftermarket. AMCO made a lot of aftermarket item back in the 60's.
.
2) Items to look for. As with any 60's jaguar is RUST! Anything else can be fixed if your mechanically inclined. Notice that I didn't say cheaply. This will give you some idea of what to look for even though it's for the small sedan 420. https://www.classicandsportscar.com/...mler-sovereign
.
3) is that messy switch panel in the middle of the dash factory? I assume that you mean the black panel above the heater controls. Yes that is for the factory A/C. Going from L-R is the LH blower switch, the temperature switch, the RH blower switch and the on/off switch. A/C was primarily for the USA. The A/C systems were developed by Jaguar NA.
.
4) Seat belts, Back in the 60"s seat belts were an option. They can easily be installed.

And as Bill stated the tires were 14". Which I always found funny on such a large car. The 420 (small sedan) had 15" wheels.. I understand that some have used XJ6 wheels (15") on them. I don't know what complications there maybe, if any.
If you are intent on buying a MK10/420G (or any Jaguar) I would suggest buying a shop manual (JCNA website) and if available a parts book. ( Ebay, I didn't see one on JCNA site)

I hope this helps and welcome to the group.
My I suggest that you add your country and/or state to your signature.

What price is the vendor asking ?
Mechanically, there is huge commonality of parts with other Jaguars, but replacement body panels are almost non-existent, even part-panels, so restoration of the body due to rust is likely to be even more expensive than normal. The car does, however, look very clean and in good condition but I'd be cautious about making it your daily driver, until you've run it about a bit and fixed the inevitable issues that you will find.

I want that car. I will remove those ugly handlebars. They could never fit on the reserved lines of the large Jaguar. I doubt the switch panel is factory, is the A/C aftermarket? If it is, that explains it all. Front seatbelts weren't required until 1966 (maybe 65) so your car may not have them from factory. Even so, there should be mount points for them even if they're unused. Rear seatbelts came later, I'm not sure when.

Hi Jerry,
If you look at the JCNA A/C Judging guide pg 53, you will find that very panel shown.

Back in the 1960s pretty much all of the A/C systems on high-end European cars were "after market". Companies like FrigiKing made model specific kits for depot or dealer installation.

A/C was a more or less common option here in the States, but was generally considered an expensive extravagance in the home market due to differences in climate.
