This car is for sale on FB - just curious as to what it is. The owner first said it is a '67 Mark IX - now he says it is a '55 Mark V. A family member is kind of interested in the car - but he would like to have an informed opinion.
The car is a Mark IX, from the late 50s or very early 60s. This model came out in the early 50 as the Mark VII, then VIII, and finally the Mark IX (Mark 9). The single piece windscreen makes it a Mark 9, the earlier cars had a split (2-piece) windscreen. From the photos you've posted, a lot of work is needed. If it's to be the basis for a restoration, pay particular attention to the interior as this costs a lot to restore. Mechanically, it is very similar to the XK120/140/150 sports cars, and was the basis for these cars. The XK120 came out before the saloon on which it was based because the saloon body shell was seriously delayed. Jaguar actually developed a traditional style saloon to make use of the chassis until the new body was available. This was the Mark V saloon, only made for about 2 years.
It looks like the cylinder head has been removed and the cylinder bores exposed to the atmosphere. The grille shell looks "odd" too. This car is a serious "project" which should not be undertaken lightly...
The MkVIII and MKIX had single piece windshields. The major difference between the two is that the MKIX had front disc brakes. So it could be 1958 to 1961.
Thank you everyone for the information. I seriously doubt this project will ever come to fruition, as the owner is all over the map on price, even more so than he is on ID of the car. At first he wanted $900, but I recently saw where he is asking $6K in another listing for the car. So I am not exactly sure what he is doing, but I think our best bet is to stay away.
