Hi everyone,

Im about to get jag MK-10 1963, this car has been in the owner's garage for about 30 years.
Before I buy this one, pls advise me about your experiences in restoration of this type and how/where I can get parts of this MK 10?

 

I have no experience restoring that type of car. Sorry. But you have already decided to acquire it and that deserves congratulations. The Mk X is one of my favourite Jaguars. It is magnificent in the right colours and can handle the resto-mod approach (bigger wheels, lowered suspension, crazy paint) really well.

Basically its a bigger older xj, so similar skills and tools are needed to restore the mk10. The best thing to do is try and acquire a donor car thats well beyond saving because body panels, glass, trim etc are nigh on impossible to sort and trying to get parts individually will ruin you. From my experience it seems only 2 types of this model exist anymore, really good ones and really bad ones. The middle ground has all but disappeared. Best of luck and dont forget some pics!

Very, very, few of these cars are around now, and there weren't all that many made when they were in production. The Mark 10 and subsequent 420G were not a sales success, the car was just too damn big !!

And again, very few get restored, because the cost can be enormous and the value after restoration so little. However, don't let that put you off !! On the mechanical side most parts are common with other Jaguars, so plenty is available for suspension, engine, etc. This is not a problem. Main thing to be aware of is that body panels are very rare now, with no new panels available anywhere due to the very low demand. However, as you're in Jakarta, I would think rust is not such a problem, but the state of the paintwork, leather, and woodwork may be poor. So don't worry as these are fairly easily restored, although the cost of new leather seat covers may be a bit eye-watering.
