Default 1966 Daimler V8 Rear Axel endfloat ???

Hi there,

I'm working on a 1966 rear axel assembly trying to work out how to set up the end float! I have an old W/S manual but nothing is mentioned except the tolerance of 3 to 5 Th.
I have used new bearings but what ever I do I have 30 th end float - were do I install shims as I can't find any in the parts list! Behind the bearing cap increases the float so I assume behind the bearing cone on the axel itself ???

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Were there any shims when you disassembled it ? If you are using a locking (positraction) unit, were the spacer parts installed ? ( see # 28 in pdf. http://www.limora.com/media/catalog/.../1/1/11977.gif

Hi there,
Thanks for the reply! all very informative and useful yet my problem is that both bearings were damaged so I could not measure the end float before stripping and the unit did not had any shims at all. but now after reassembling with new bearings I had 30 th end float both side so I could not use any shims in the normal way and so I was after the answer what to do if you had such excessive tolerances.
Well, in the end to get to the proper end float I had to machine the outer plate (brake plate holder) to the specific set out clearance of say 3 to 5 th!
It works fine AS IS, but it can't be right that way I still think that there must be some damage to the tubs but can't find anything as the tubes look in perfect condition!
Anyway, thanks again. rgs aktell
