Primaz ~ My car is not a "trailer queen". I enjoy driving it and if I can't drive & enjoy it I don't want it. I do not run up your sort of mileage. I do not own a trailer.
Glyn,
That is great that you actually drive the car! I too rebuilt my car with every nut and bolt new and often many parts powder coated, etc. but with my Jaguar being the workhorse daily driven weekday car my undercarriage and engine cannot stay pristine even though initially it looked similar to your attention to detail which is why assumed your car is a trailer queen. At least you drive it a little, probably not very far as the undercarriage still looks like a concourse car. I drive my car as you know much more than most and drive it to its limits; so I know from being a performance auto enthusiast that the car handles well, stops, accelerates, is reliable, etc. as I experience all of that where it matters on the road not theoretically.
Again you are so against modified Jaguars and continue to post off topic replies to preach your one sided views.
Get your facts straight, VW and Porsche designed the first beetle and have a long history together. Thus using Porsche parts on a VW is keeping with the founders of that vehicle and upgrading the performance but not changing the use of the car. Improving a car with modern technology while keeping it for the same purpose is not loosing the car's sole. If one were to take an all purpose street car and make it into a narrow use such as a pure drag car that cannot drive on the street because it cannot make normal turns or function in stop in go traffic then that is something different. Not everyone is a purist so stop preaching one view and being negative.
Here are the facts about VW and Porsche:1931
Ferdinand Porsche opens a design office, the first stage of a business that will later become the eponymous sports car maker.
1938
Porsche, who designed the first VW Beetle, oversees the building of the first production hall for Volkswagen.
1960
State-owned Volkswagen is privatized, with both the federal government and the company's home state of Lower Saxony receiving a 20 percent stake.
1993
Ferdinands Porsche's grandson, Ferdinand Piech, becomes chief executive of Volkswagen, meaning "the people's car" in German. His revolutionary "platform strategy," which involves using the same basic design for different models and adding bespoke components on top, allowed economies of scale and was credited with saving the company from possible collapse.
2002
Piech appoints Bernd Pischetsrieder as his successor as CEO and Piech becomes Volkswagen's chairman, a position he will hold until 2015.
2005
September - Porsche says it plans to buy a 20 percent stake in VW and later emerges with a 10.3 percent voting stake.
November - Porsche's supervisory board authorizes an increase in the stake to 29.9 percent, triggering speculation it plans to gain majority control.
2007
April - Porsche submits a mandatory takeover offer for Volkswagen after crossing 30 percent threshold.
2008
March - Porsche SE's supervisory board gives the go-ahead to raise its Volkswagen voting stake to more than 50 percent.
October - Porsche SE says it holds stock and options that give it control of 74 percent of Volkswagen's votes and announces plans for a "domination" agreement. A resulting scramble for Volkswagen shares by shortsellers caught out by the announcement briefly makes VW the world's most valuable company.
2009
January - Porsche SE says it has raised its VW voting stake to 50.8 percent and confirms its plan to raise stake to 75 percent later if conditions allow.
May - Porsche SE drops the Volkswagen takeover plan and says it will instead pursue a merger with Europe's largest automaker. Volkswagen Chairman Piech says Porsche must get its 9 billion euro debt under control before any deal can be agreed.
July - Porsche SE Chairman Wolfgang Porsche, Piech's cousin, calls an extraordinary supervisory board meeting for July 23 to discuss a possible sale of a stake in Porsche SE to Qatar worth over 5 billion euros. A proposal by Porsche's board to prepare for a capital increase of at least 5 billion euros ($5 billion) in cash and/or a contribution in kind, is approved by the supervisory board, setting the stage for a merger with Volkswagen. Porsche SE Wendelin Wiedeking steps down.
December - Volkswagen says it has bought 49.9 percent of Porsche SE's sports car business Porsche AG at a cost of 3.9 billion euros.
2010
January - A group of investment funds sues Porsche SE and two of its former top executives, accusing them of fraud in a "short squeeze" that caused the funds to lose more than $1 billion from Porsche's attempted takeover of Volkswagen AG in 2008.
April - Elliott Associates, L.P. says the securities fraud and manipulation lawsuit against Porsche SE has got bigger, that it is seeking more than $2 billion in losses and 18 investment funds have joined the lawsuit.
October - Auto holding Porsche SE says it may not be absorbed into Volkswagen by the end of 2011, as planned, due to some unresolved legal and tax issues related to the deal, the CEO of both companies, Martin Winterkorn, says.
2012
July - Volkswagen agrees to buy the remaining 50.1 percent stake in Porsche AG from Porsche SE for about 4.5 billion euros. Porsche AG, the carmaker, is now fully owned by Volkswagen AG, while Porsche SE, which is controlled by the Porsche and Piech families, is Volkswagen's largest shareholder and holds a majority of voting rights.
2022
February - Volkswagen and Porsche SE say they are examining a possible initial public offering of Porsche AG, under a proposed structure that would give Porsche SE a blocking minority in the eponymous carmaker.
September - Volkswagen announces its intention to list Porsche at the end of September or early October.
Wow an awful lot of off topic and unnecessary information and yet your car is still not a Jaguar anymore. I have never said I did not like your car and have on a number of occasions said I would love to have it in my garage but it would have to be alongside my original Stock S Type. I have never said I was against modifications but they have their place and when done correctly are very good. But when you change as much as you have on your car you can no longer call it a 3.8s Jaguar.
My car was rated best in country 100> points by the judging panel. I only ever wanted to do that once & it has been done & achieved. Got the piece of paper to frame. I now drive the car for fun and quite often. It gets washed underneath just like it gets washed on top. Nothing unusual about that with cars you take to shows. They walk around with mirrors inspecting the underbody. I thoroughly enjoy it. As I say If I can't drive it I don't want it. My cheap insurance limits me to 5000kms per annum. So Cass and I are doing similar mileage.

You should replace that buggered up & bent plate under the diff. It looks awful.
What a mess ~ we have different standards.
Yours.
Mine: New. ~ excuse the reflections.

I'm not going to get into this again. Search Ackermann angles. This has been covered ad nauseam. Search on this forum.
They are seldom anywhere close to correct with Rack & Pinion steering installed causing slip of the front wheels. Front wheels require to turn at different angles to maintain Ackermann angles. Many don't care & just scuff up their front tyres. There is the correct way or the any old thing will do attitude.
Racecar Engineering also covers this well ~ Written by engineers for engineers. (might go over some heads)
Jaguar's original steering maintains Ackermann angles.
I’m new here so if you’re not “going to get into this again” why not just scroll by and not be so snippy. This one of my first posts and if this is the attitude I’m going to have to deal with I’ll just go elsewhere.
This is all new to me I haven’t had an English car since I was 20:something, I’m three times that now. All I was asking is: do people change the steering system from one type to another. A simple straight forward question.
The steering seems ok. I have no intention of changing it. I’ve never driven any Jaguar before, so I’m just thrilled to have one now! Thanks for your response.

It's good that you are happy with the conclusion. Don't be offended with the bumpy responses. You happened on a subject where there's been a lot of 'discussion' over the years. It's best to see it all in a positive light and be pleased that our old cars can arouse so much passion. I hope you will enjoy your car and continue to contribute to these pages.
I joined this forum a while back when I was restoring an E-Type. So just "rejoined" in 2023. I don't see anything wrong with any current discourse. Just keeping one's sense of humor might help out?

Yes people do change the steering system from one type to another. It can be done a number of ways, the most common is the conversions to a standard Jaguar XJ6 rack and pinion and the other more expensive is electronic steering. I believe you have an XJ6 conversion? if so when the rack eventually wears out don't worry you can get a rebuilt one or have yours rebuilt. Be aware some of the rebuilt ones with the same model number may have slight differences in their casting, etc. On a stock engine it probably does not affect anything. My car have very tight clearances due to the V8, I did have to tweak the mounts and tie rods just a bit due to the rebuilt same model number being slightly different.
Both types work fine. Sorry you are experiencing what I have realized is just the weird situation with Jaguar owners being so opinionated and against any modification even a minor one like upgrading the steering system to the point they will just keep ranting until they are always the last to post on every thread. The good thing is there are folks here whom can give you information you want, just ignore all the noise and be aware you have to filter the replies as you have unfortunately have found out on one of your first posts. It is futile to change their minds as they will take any thread off topic and love to rant for days and will never stop until they get the last word in, it is just a Jaguar thing?
Standards are an interesting topic. I have only little interest in the engineering topic being discussed in this thread but I have great interest in THE WAY in which it is being discussed.
KEEP IT CIVIL.
Accept that everyone is at different points on the learning curve and inevitably we all have different priorities and budgets. Many topics across our forums are raised frequently and this is only to be expected. Anyone who finds this tedious can either add useful links to previous relevant threads or ignore the latest question and move on.
Perhaps some of the countless hours you have spent learning about your Jaguar could have been better spent learning the most basic skills of human interaction....

Don I don't think there is any need for a comment like that and even more so from a Moderator. I think you need some instruction in what a Moderator is suppose to do and how to act. I think another Moderator needs to step in here and sort this out and quickly before you lose someone with the expansive knowledge that Glyn has got and offers to this forum. His photo collection alone is one of the biggest assets this part of the forum has. (A picture paints a thousand words.). Think again on your comment and I would suggest after you remove it that you apologies.
You are in desperate need of cultural diversity training. The rest of the world is not just like America. This is a global forum. e.g. South Africans, Aussies, etc. say it as it is. Then we all go out for a beer together ~ never a hard feeling in sight. I had a global job before retirement that kept me traveling 230 days a year for decades in execution of that. I lived in the US for an extended period both in Dallas & Marin County, Bay Area.

I commend you for editing your earlier posts to remove some of your rude and condescending comments.
Perhaps you would care to also revise these incongruous statements; the second undermines your credibility as an authority on the first:

Be advised that I and other moderators have heard privately from members who do not appreciate your treatment of others over the years. Your status at any other forum is meaningless here. The condition of your car and any awards it has received are irrelevant in this thread. You future here depends entirely on your willingness to edit your posts before you submit them, not after you have insulted and offended others. The first words that come to your mind may not be the most effective means of sharing your knowledge and opinions while being a constructive member of the Jaguar Forums community.
I did not edit out anything objectionable. I do think you should take my cultural diversity training comment to heart. IMHO of course. I would prefer to be quoted completely to maintain context which you have chosen not to do. I shall spend more time on MBWorld than I do already and less here where I come for fun & enjoyment and answer questions I know the answer to.
