Hello all,
Working on a Daimler 250 [1969] I'm in the final stages of a repair I've changed the seals on my steering box, but it still leaked a lot from the pivot arm. I'm wondering if I put the seals in backwards?
The orientation on the picture is how I've had them installed. First the umbrella type seal, then the washer, then circlip. I'm banging my head wondering what I could have done wrong?
The bronze bearing inside the box seems fine, though there was a minimal axial movement
Generally the problem with this seal is you have to force it over the splines of the shaft. The splines of the shaft are sharp and cut the inside of the seal so you end up getting a leak. To fit the seal first wrap it in cling film or Pallet wrap followed by a coating of grease. This allows the seal to go over the splines without being damaged and then you can remove the cling film once it is in place.
As for orientation this is how my old original seal washer and circlip came out. Metal washer first then rubber seal and finally circlip. Helps to take photos at every stage when dismantling.
