I use brake assembly lube on the die and line when making the flare. Also don't over pull the lever on either step. Lube & right pressure prevents the metal from splitting. Do test flares to learn any tool.

I bought the Eastwood tool to make all new brake lines and to adapt some metric new bits. It's an investment that really does pay for itself quickly. As noted, you do not need to yank on the tool, slow steady pressure and you will feel the tool bottom out where it is supposed to. Bought some greasy copper colored lube and the metric dies and mandrel and everything worked like a charm.
